Insurance Question

So I just changed over my insurance from TX to MI and they quoted me a price of $203 a month.

DH and I have never had a ticket or accident or anything.  Does that rate sound about right?? Its a $100 jump from here in TX.

Re: Insurance Question

  • 1. Do you have 1 or 2 cars?

    2. What type of car(s) do you have?

  • It also depends on where you will be living.  My insurance rates dropped when I moved from our townhouse to our house.

How much more of a rate increase is it?  How much were you paying per month before?  Was it with the same company?

ETA:  nevermind I saw that it was a $100/month jump.  But my other question still stands, did you keep the same company or switch all together?

  • We kept the same company and I drive a Jetta and DH drives a Focus

  • Admittedly I know very little about insurance other than you need it.  But my guess it has to do with outside factors - where you will be living, possibly the change in climate (icy conditions = more accidents?), etc.  Plus I'm sure each state has different laws as to insurance requirements so that may play a factor as well.

You could always shop around to see if you can get a better rate.

  • Sounds a little high, but it depends on the age of your cars too.  We have a F250 & a Jeep Grand Cherokee (both 2005 though) and we have an enclosed trailer on our policy. All three cost us about $826 every 6 months, so $137 a month.

  • I was going to say, DH and I pay about $210/mon for a 2010 Dodge Avenger and a 2011 Ford Fiesta.  However, we've both had tickets in the last year.  (mine was 3 days before Christmas)

It couldn't hurt for you to shop around a little bit!

  • Moving from Texas to MI did increase our premiums a little bit. But we also switched companies (from AAA to State Farm) because AAA was ridiculous. We live in Oakland county. Also, MI is a no-fault state and Texas isn't, so I believe that's why insurance premiums are higher here.

  • That seems a little high to me.  We pay about $165 a month when you figure it out, and we have two cars (2007 and 2010) living in a house.  We both have clean driving records. It might also depend on your coverage level in general but I think we have pretty decent coverage.

We have our insurance through Ameriprise, which is linked through Costco.  It's been the cheapest I've found.

  • It depends on your coverage (PPL vs Collision/Comprehensive) too. We have one car fully covered and one minimal and pay a little under $150/mo. but I also have an accident from about 4-5yrs ago not sure when that will stop affecting my rate.

From what I've heard, insurance rates in MI are quite high compared to other states but I've never shopped for car insurance elsewhere.

You may want to shop around for quotes to see if you can find a better rate, and look at your coverage to decide if you need full coverage on your cars or if it's better to just get PPL and save on premiums.

ETA - and check what your deductible is too. You may save a bit going to a 1k deductible vs. 500.

  • Thanks ladies.   I am going to shop around and hopefully find something better.

All this changing stuff is making my head hurt and my wallet shrink :(
