Super moms.

I need to find one and take notes, because really, this kid is going to be the death of me. He will not sleep at night, and as we speak is inconsolably screaming. I put him in his bed for just a few so that I don't have a meltdown myself, but I hate just letting him cry. Mostly this is just a vent, but if you have ideas I'd love to hear them!

Re: Super moms.

  • he's only one month old-- i think you should just try and relax and not let it get the best of you just yet. there's a lot of adjusting for you *and* baby.  if he's crying, he's uncomfortable. try different things on what could make him happier. is he hungry, cold, hot, just wants to be held?

  • It could be a lot of things....Does he have a set bedtime or routine you guys follow? Is he BF? How is the temp in his room? Do you swaddle?

I've had many near meltdown moments. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just walk away for a few minutes so you can clear your head. You are doing great!

  • We try to make sure the lights are off by 930 or 10, but he doesn't always actually fall asleep then. He only sleeps about 2 hours at a time at night right now. We recently stopped BFing because I am going back to work and can't pump during work hours, really. The whole house seems to be a decent temp, and he is wrapped up (usually seems happier at a warmer temp). We do swaddle sometimes, but it depends on his mood whether it works or not. I think he's settling down now, but this morning has been rough, because even being held didn't calm him down like it usually does.

  • Happiest Baby On the Block. Seriously. Swaddle that baby tight (arms in!), bounce/sway, put him on his side (preferrably left) or belly, make a loud shushing noise (or run a hairdryer or vacuum), and give him a pacifier or your breast.

I highly suggest you read that book or watch the video! GL!

  • You are in the worst of it. I promise. Peak for fussiness is 6 to 8 weeks of age. It gets better. Hang in there.

White noise worked well for bkb. I downloaded an app for free on my phone as soon as I put it up to her ear she would stop crying and go to sleep. She doesn't have colic, but she is a pretty fussy baby. Swaddling helped keep her asleep at night even though she hates being put in it. She'd wake herself up with her arms. She started sleeping much better at night when we kept her warm, swaddled, and after eight weeks of age. She still has trouble going down to sleep, but she's only been getting up once during the night to eat.

  • also try checking our your baby-month-board on thebump. you can see what other moms with the same age are going through. that'd be a good resource for you to see and also to get some good advice there.

I've noticed several of you are, which is why I posted here too. I did on TB as well, but I thought the more responses I could get, the better. Thanks for all of your advice, it's much needed!

What time do you guys usually get up for the day? Babies are suppose to sleep 12 hours. So if you're going to bed by 9:30-10 Q should be getting up around that time the next day. I know if my LO goes to bed too late he has a BAD night. The sweet spot for us is bath by 7, asleep by 7:20 and he will only get up once.

I've been on the Dec 2011 board for a while too, so it's going up there as well! Thanks!

I'd really like to get him to bed before that, but he won't cooperate, usually. And he gets up early. I am up by 5-630 every day, and usually he is up about then too. I try to put him back down, but at that point he usually is up until 9ish and then naps. I'd like to fix his schedule but I'm not sure how!

I think I will be headed to the library for Happiest Baby book too!

  • I recommend reading Healthy Sleep Habits... reading that helped me realize what is realistic and when it is necessary to start sleep training.

Typical schedule for us is Up at between 6-7

    Morning nap 9-10

    afternoon nap 1-3

Brief nap on the way home from day care 5:30-6

    Asleep by 7:30....

Like I said if he goes to bed too late or even if he misses that mini nap on the way home he's a crankypants.

  • Also, babies at this point really don't have a "schedule". They eat when they're hungry, sleep when they're tired, etc. Another book to check out is Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.
