Puppy training

As crazy at it makes me sound, we are thinking of adopting a puppy.  My cousin had a 6-8 week old puppy dumped on her that they can't keep and we are thinking of adopting him.  So, if you have gone through puppy training classes or had someone come to your house can you recommend them and tell me roughly what it cost.  Our last dog came to us at 3 years old and already had basic training so we just worked with her a little bit at home and she was good to go.  I know a puppy will be a whole 'nother world!  TIA!!

And just for fun, here he is (all 1.6 pounds of him):

Re: Puppy training

  • Ohmygosh - I LOVE him!  SO cute!  We are planning on getting a puppy here in the next few months, and we'll be doing classes at Petsmart.  We had many friends go through them in Omaha, and always had great experiences.  I think they also do one-on-one sessions, too.

What kind of puppy is he?

The best her vet can guess is he is a Shih Tzu mixed with either a Pomeranian, Chihuahua, or Maltese.   She has no history on him as he was just dumped, poor little thing.

We had been looking through local rescues, but hadn't found a dog that would fit with our lifestyle and would still be good with kids, but this little guy seems perfect, although he will take some work with training that an older dog wouldn't necessarily need.

  • We did the ARL out west, but I heard Petsmart was better.  Our dog is naughty, I am not sure anything would have helped him.  The ARL guy actually kinda gave up on him.  I wish we could have gotten our money back!

  • oh my gosh!!! how cute!

we have used the ARL main location, and really liked it.

eta: there is also Rover's Ranch, www.roversranch.com

  • We did Petsmart. I think it was around $90? They were good but we had already taught our dog most of the basics beforehand so she didn't learn much. I do wish we would have done the next class though.

I know that if we didn't have wood floors we'd totally have a puppy by now too. Instead... we have two African Dwarf Frogs on the way. sweet.  lol!
