Why is Rick Steves' anti-Barcelona? (book rec?)

I figured we'd go with Rick Steves' Barcelona book after hearing raves of his books for other cities; but his most recent Barcelona book was published in 2009....do you think it's worth getting? Or are we better off getting a newer publication, like Frommer's, Time Out, Fodors, etc?

Re: Why is Rick Steves' anti-Barcelona? (book rec?)

  • maybe i'm the only one, but i've always preferred frommer's and DK eyewitness guides to rick steves. i especially love pauline frommer's guides (they replaced the "wherever from $__/day" series, though those are usually for entire countries not just cities. for barcelona we got a small rough guide and a knopf guide that has good maps. they were small enough to carry both around each day.

  • I found his book still up to date when I went last year. The only thing I can say is don't count on is his restaurant recommendations. We had never used his restaurant recommendations before and walked by one at St. Josephs market and decided to try it. OMG it was ridiculous, for a place that said it was cheap eats it was no menu and ended up being 70 euros for 3 very small items. It's at the front of the market and called Bar Pinxto. I think the fame of being in the book tripled his prices. We had been to Bar Boqueria in the market before and feasted like kings for 40 euros including beer.

The descriptions of sites and things to do though is very helpful.

Haha, yikes!  Thanks for the Bar Boqueria rec!
  • I planned all of our activities online and then used Time Out for dining and bar recs.

We did a cooking class with Cook and Taste that was awesome and had a great meal at Taller de Tapas and super cheap cava at Can Paixano.

  •  I wouldn't say that just because he hasn't updated his book since 2009 makes him anti-Barcelona.

Like PP said, look into DK eyewitness books or even the "top 10 of Barcelona".  I like that those are small and flat and I don't have to worry about carrying a huge book around.

Ha, it was a partial joke.  Just noticing that he seems to enjoy Italy, Frances and their cities more than Barcelona; or at least travel there more because there is so much more information for them; Spain and Barcelona is not as much.

He does prefer Madrid, which in some circles means anti-Barcelona.

  • I can't stand Rick Steves for this reason. His entire Switzerland book has less than ten pages on the French speaking part of the country and only one on Geneva which says not to go there. He decides he doesn't like something and tells everyone to stay away for no other reason than his personal tastes. That is not how a travel guide should be.edited to remove a stupid typo.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who isn't on the rick steves bandwagon
