Ojo

Would you be a paralegal in the civilian world?

ETA - Do you enjoy your actual job?

Re: Ojo

  • I usually enjoy my job, but I'm not sure I'd want to do it forever.  No offense to the attorneys in the crowd, but it's such a Type A career that I don't know that I can sustain it forever.  We rotate sections every year or so to avoid getting in too much of a rut, so the thought of doing the same thing every day for years on end scares me a little, but that applies to pretty much every career I've considered.

I loved doing defense work, but by the end of my two year stint, I hated most of our clients.  My attorney sucked as a leader, so maybe with a better one, I could handle it for a much longer period of time.  I was good at it and I know my work made a huge difference to a lot of people.  (Same goes for the legal office side, but we don't deal with the clients to the extent I did on defense.)

I've heard legal secretaries are treated decently on the outside.  I've never seen it, so it could all be a myth.

It really depends on the attorney you work for.  The last attorney I worked directly for at this firm was fantastic.  I made a lot of my own decisions regarding cases and he just signed off on them.  He was the type that didn't micromanage if you could prove yourself.

Ah, so it's the same as any supervisor/subordinate paralegal/lawyer relationship.  Some of my attorneys have kicked ass.  Some not so much.

  • I'm thinking of changing my career direction more toward the law side than the enforcement side. I'm not sure I want to endure law school so I started thinking paralegal and a lot of credits I have would transfer over toward a paralegal degree/certificate. I'm thinking I'll finish my AAS in Law Enforcement and then just get a certificate on top so I could go either way(TWSS). Just an idea I'm toying around with.

Any idea how your military classes/experience would transfer toward a civilian degree?

I got my CCAF in Criminal Justice (two year degree) with very little effort and I'm still working on finishing the Bachelors.  I hate my classes because they're very focused on the police side of it and they seem to overlook the fact that many of these people will face years in the criminal justice system.  The process doesn't end at arrest or arraignment the next morning.  The fun is only beginning and my classes don't focus much on what I do.

I've procrastinated in signing up for more classes because I think I want to switch to pre-veterinary, a pretty drastic change from my current path.

  • Yeah I can see how that would be hard. I think it could be advantageous having some LE experience but I'd need more of the step by step process of what happens after. I might ask some more questions as I look at specifics for various programs if that's ok.
