Pitbulls too dangerous?

A FB friend of mine posted on his FB wall yesterday a youtube link to a man sharing his feelings that pitbulls should not live in the suburbs. They are the most dangerous kind of dog and kill too many people.

I haven't done the research as to whether or not that every pitbull born is a man eater, but the pitbulls I know personally are all sweethearts.

Anyway, this FB friend then posted today that he thinks every pitbull dog owner/breader should have their dog(s) registered so that every person can know if they have a "man eating" dog at their house.

Apparently that clip says that there is basically a ticking time bomb in each pitbull that will go off at some age that they will just attack and become dangerous.

What do you think?

  • Google bite rates per breed. Then google "can you spot the pitbull". I hate the stereotypes on breeds in general. I would comment more but I'm about to go to bed and I'm nesting from my phone.

  • I think bsr sucks. Pitbulls rate better on human dog interactions than golden retrievers ffs. I'd give you a longer answer with links, but I'm on my phone.

  • I think it goes right back to training and how the owner treats the dog. And I think that the few badly trained badly treated dogs of certain breeds make a bad name for the rest of the good well trained dogs of that same breed. I'm not saying the dogs are bad, they really aren't its the way in which they are trained or what they were trained for that causes the problems.

Take for example Great Danes. When I was a kid my grandparent's neighbor had one that was horribly viscous and mean and turned on his owner. My grandparents had to save the man's life. They you have my brother's sweet sweet boy Harley who is about 2 and is so so so so sweet and would never hurt a fly. And I'm sure Marie's dog, Bentley is a lot like my brother's dog.

So in the end it really just depends on who is training them and what they are training them for.

  • I used to work at State Farm in the homeowners department, processing claims. Dog bites are under homeowner insurance, so I processed stuff about them all the time. I never saw one pit bull attack, but I did see countless varieties of retriever/lab attacks.

I am not saying retrievers are vicious animals, but where I lived retrievers were extremely common. Its more about how you raise it or neglect to train it.

How do you explain Michael Vick's dogs? 47 of the 51 dogs seized from his home, known as the most violent dogs in American history, went on to become loving household pets. Some are Canine Good Citizens and even therapy dogs. Of the four or five that had to be euthanized, only one or two of them were because they were beyond rehabilitation. The others were just sick or injured beyond repair. So I'd actually argue that it's not the owner, the trainer, how they're brought up, etc. And actually, using how they're brought up is exactly what scares people away from shelter dogs.

And like Lemon said, people can't identify breeds as well as they think they can. Wilson's DNA says he's a bulldog & Golden Retriever. Not a boxer, not a pit. Also, pit bulls used to be nanny dogs. They were routinely left alone with children because they were perceived safe.

  • My boyfriend's service dog (in training) is a pit bull...he is a very intelligent dog and is going through a great deal of training to help with my bf's PTSD and seizures.

  • I think your friend and the person in that video are ignorant.  And what's with the ticking time bomb bullsh_t that people spout off?  As if every pit bull that's ever lived has attacked somebody.  Ignorance and willful stupidity.
  • I get really upset with the ignorance that surrounds opinions on pit bulls.  I think pits are a beautiful breed of dog.  I'm fairly certain that one of my dogs (AKC certified therapy dog, btw) is part pit.  Her shelter records state shepherd/rott but I think the rott part should be pit.

  • I'm still not sure what I think. There's a lot of negative stigmas around pitbulls. But H really wants one. He always tells me that it's how you raise them but of course there are always those who are just outright aggressive.

But you can say that about any breed, right?  Also, I think there are very few dogs which are just plain aggressive.  Often times it comes down to whether the owner gets help understanding why the animal is behaving that way as well as being unwilling to pay for the training to help it.

Edit:  To clarify - by "just plain aggressive" I mean that most dogs aren't aggressive (to everyone and everything) by nature.  Some dogs have certain triggers, and it's up to the owner to give the dog a chance to work through those circumstances.

  • These stereotypes make me so angry! I am a very proud pitbull owner. In my life I have owned 3 pits and they were the sweetest dogs I have ever been around. Pits are not naturally mean dogs. They are only mean if they are taught to be. Toy poodles are more prone to be aggressive than pits are. Your friends video is ridiculous and definitely deserves an un-friend!!!
  • What a sad person the man who made that video is.... My Jetta wouldn't hurt a fly. She'd lick you to death before hurting anyone. And she was found starving in the desert with severe mastitis and no pups. She's barely a year old too! Humans are the problem, not Pibbles.

  • From what I understand, most dogbites come from labs and spaniels. The former because everyone has one and the latter because their spastic little shiits who oppose being stepped on.

But anyhoodle, yeahno, pitties are no more dangerous than any other poorly trained, badly socialized dog who isn't being looked after by their owner.

  • I've had 12 foster dogs in my house with my children over the past nearly two years.  Of those, 8 were pittie mixes.  I meet every dog before I bring it home to my kids.  I make sure they're temperment matches up with our family.  I would not hesitate to bring other home.

BTW, I've worked around dogs and been around dogs my entire life.  My first dog was a pittie.  The only dogs I have ever been attacked by were a Yorkie and a Golden Retriever.  The Goldie went for my face.

  • I think Pitbulls are under harsh and negative publicity, you have to blame the owners for their dogs actions, people have to educate themselves about the breed in order to understand the breed, positive training and reinforcements is all it take to raise a good quality pitbull.
