Moving from Canada to Estonia

Hey everyone!

I'm new to The Nest, but I've been on The Knot for a while so anyone who hangs out over there might know me.

H and I will be moving to Estonia after we finish school and get some things together with our own business (we're estimating about 4 years down the road...I know that seems like a long time out but we're starting our research now).

Does anyone have any experience going to Estonia that they could share with me?  I've already looked into the visas and residency requirements, I'm looking for guidance about how to set up things like banking (since our Canadian accounts are essentially useless outside of Canada), private health insurance (since we've always had our government health insurance I'm totally lost with this one) and the emotional effects of moving overseas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi, and welcome.  I have absolutely zero advice about Estonia, but I'm super curious!  What is special about that country?  Do you have family/friends there?

Most of the ladies here are in Europe, so it's a bit late, but I'm sure tomorrow you'll have more responses!

  • Hi! My DH and I are American and we've been living in London for a year and a half. I don't know much about living in Estonia, but I studied abroad in Lithuania and we visited Estonia over a weekend! Such a beautiful area. If its anything like Lithuania, it'll be cold, dark (for half the year) and the people are very hard to open up. I learned so much about Soviet era, and the people are still really suffering from the oppressive government.

  • No advice on living there but we have visited Estonia and absolutely loved it. Tallinn is a really cool city. We loved Lithuania too.

  • Hi and welcome to the board! I know next to nothing about Estonia, so I'm no help. Why are you choosing to move there? Or are you choosing?

  • Well, I think that if you can get past the oppressive government and the lack of personal firearms you should be fine.

I haven't been (would love to go) but any chance to live in a new culture can be a fantastic experience if you go in with the right attitude. Estonia sounds so exciting!

  • Hi and welcome to the board! I am also curious to know how you decided upon Estonia. I was in Tallinn for a weekend with a girlfriend last year and we had a fantastic time but I wouldn't think of it as a place to move to start a business - the economy is really depressed. We took a free tour of the city and the guide was a student in Tallinn and he was telling us some pretty overwhelming things about the poverty, etc. However... it was a gorgeous city and I'd love to head back to Estonia some day, when I was looking into it, there were some gorgeous pictures of the countryside around there.

  • Cheers to another potential Northern European Nestie! Big Smile

I'm in Norway, so like everyone else, I've only traveled there for a short visit. One of my colleagues is married to a woman from Estonia, so if you have any specific questions, I could ask him.

The emotional effects of moving overseas definitely vary by person, but I think everyone generally agrees that the two biggest factors are how well do you handle being in difficult and confusing situations, and how hard is it for you to be away from your friends/family?

  • I'm another one who has never lived there but visited and loved it. Tallinn and Parnu are both great towns.
