clicky: WWSND - Work Party

I usually don't go to work parties/GTGs because they are kinda lame, and I'm not really friends with anyone at work.  BUT there is a work party early next week at Lot #3.

I've been to Lot #3 a few times for HH, and I LOVED it there.  So I'm SUPER tempted to attend this work party just for the free food and drinky-dranks.  The average age of employees who would be attending is 35-50, and I'm 26 (27 in a month though Stick out tongue).  So I don't have a ton in common with them.  I'm the secretary of the office, and the rest of the people who will probably attend are senior managers, account managers, recruiters, and a handful of finance and HR folks.

I need to RSVP by the end of the day, Help!

  • Go for 1 drink and leave.

This is the perfect quote from the Office last week:

Jim Halpert: You're looking at the master of leaving parties early. they key is you have to make a strong impression, so you want to have a picture taken, you want to say something particular and non sequitur that people remember, you want to note something unique, a talking point for later. I don't mean to brag, but New Year's Eve? I was home by nine.

  • It's find to normally skip the GTG/work parties, but I think you should attend the occasional one. If you were to always skip, then people might think you thought you were too good for them, uppity, or whatever. (People are dumb). You don't need to go to every one, but once in a great while is good to maintain some rapport. This is a good one since you love Lot #3. 1-2 (free!?) drinks and then you're out!

Then in that case, I'd go, have a drink or two and some apps, talk to a couple of people, then high-tail it out of there to be home in time for dinner. :)

  • I say go, and then mix and mingle with your coworkers.  I found that once I got into the working world, no one really cared what age you were.  Besides - you never know who you could talk to or impress in your office that may think of you if a different job comes open (whether or not you'd want it - you'd always want to be considered for it).  I try to do the "networking" thing as much as possible, without making it fake or awkward.  And if it sucks - then have a drink, eat some snacks, and have an excuse pre-created for why you have to leave (something like, "Oh, H got tickets to see some comedy show or movie or something").
