Buy better flannel.

LQS flannel pills much much less than Walmart flannel, but it cost three times more.

yup, I did! Still pills. I guess, in perspective, it does pill less.
Better quality flannels will pill less, but flannel by its very nature is going to pill since most of what is available in stores is brushed flannel. That is what makes it so soft to the touch. Unbrushed flannel will not pill as much, but it will typically not feel as soft either.
Pilling is caused by friction so you can reduce it by handwashing and hanging to dry--but not sure that it is worth the effort.
