Can you recommend your camera for vacations?

I'm going to Paris in a few months and am looking for a new camera. I want something that's fast but also has high image quality for beautiful pics on the trip. I don't mind spending up to $800 because I want it to be a good camera. Thanks!

Re: Can you recommend your camera for vacations?

  • I just bought a Canon Rebel DSLR and love it...but while I was debating what to get, I borrowed my bosses Canon Powershot.  You could look into the F12, S100 or S95 (I'm not sure if they're still manufactured); but they took great pics and are more compact for traveling.
  • I love my Canon T2i, but honestly - unless you want to carry around a big camera and learn a little about photography, you would be better suited with a good point & shoot.

If you have any desire to one day use a DSLR, I highly recommend the Canon S95 (the S100 is the newer version, but is more expensive). The S95 is a great compact that has good image quality and is very popular among DSLR owners. You can use it just fine in Auto and if you want to "graduate," you can move on to the other settings easily. The aperture or shutter speed can be changed via a dial around the lens and the ISO can be changed with a button (in the applicable modes).

I bought one last month to use on our cruise, especially in ports where I didn't want to lug around my DSLR and expensive lenses, etc. I still looooove my T2i, but I'm a firm believer in using the right tool for the job at hand. The S95 did the trick and I was very happy with it.

  • i had the cannon rebel (it broke) and loved that and replaced it w the Nikon D3100, which i also love. Definitley check out the DSLRs. The Nikon has video, which was why i went with that one instead of another Rebel when I was replacing mine. Both great cameras, it's really just preference. I now recently broke my flash though and have to get it fixed! i'm so damn clumsy, lol. I recommend getting insurance on it for obvious reasons. :)

    Have fun!

My Rebel T3 has video; actually it's ranked one of the top DSLR HD videos!
  • I have a Nikon D3100 and absolutely love it.  Yes, it's bulkier than my Canon point and shoot, but the quality of the pictures is night and day.

Having said that, I am in the minority of people that do not love the Canon Powershots.  Prior to getting the Canon I always had Sonys and thought the color, the crispness, etc. were excellent.  If I were in the market for a point and shoot, I'd look at a Sony or maybe a Nikon now since I'm so happy with the DSLR.

Even in auto mode, I think the Nikon D3100 is outstanding.  After taking a photography class and learning how to use the camera a bit more, I'm even happier. I got mine from B+H Photo and got a great deal on a camera with the kit lens and a telephoto lens - maybe $650?

  • Thanks everyone! I think I'm going to go for the Nikon D3100!

    ditto

we had a canon powershot that crapped out after two years (photos were good, not great) while our panasonic lumix cameras are 3 & 4 years old and still working perfectly. i just got the D3100 and i looooove it!

if you change your mind on the D3100, i highly recommend checking out the lumix website. they use leica lenses (which are awesome) and have everything from point & shoots under $200 to almost DSLRs around $500. my friend who has a canon DSLR was jealous of the zoom on my lumix. i also like our $110 lumix because it fits in my pocket.

I have a Canon Rebel T1i, and it takes awesome video.

As someone else said, unless you're going to spend time actually learning about aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc.,  and unless you're willing to invest the money in good lenses, you're better off with a point and shoot.  I have a Canon Powershot A70 (bought it like 10 years ago), and it still works fine.  That's the camera I took with me on my backpacking trip to Europe, and it took some incredible photos (good enough that CNN put some on their website).  Nikon is good too though.  Try them out in the store and see what you like best.
