Just made an appt for my first...

Tattoo! I'm excited it's my birthday gift to myself. I'm going next Saturday. Any advice ladies and tips on pain management?

Re: Just made an appt for my first...

  • What are you getting?

As far as the pain goes, I'm sure it depends where you get it. I got mine in the middle of my back (think just below your bra strap) and the pain was gone right when the tattoo gun stopped, it was just tender.

  • AWESOME!!! My inking is postponed until at least October. What are you getting and where? Just an FYI, the ribs hurt most, and feet are uncomfortable if you do it on the boney area (top) Some advice to not make it hurt more.. don't take any pain meds beforehand. For some reason when you take something to block the pain, it makes it so much worse. I took advil for a headache once, and vicodin once because my appt was after my car accident, and both times I had to make my artist stop. That's really saying something because I was always able to sit for 2-3 hours with him and would often nod off in the chair. (yes, people really can fall asleep while getting tattooed) And alcohol before will make you bleed more and cause more scarring during the healing process. A good artist won't ink you if they smell booze on your breath anyway.

If you need after care advice, just lemme know. I've worked in a few shoppes and have seen a lot.. not to mention I have a lot of ink lol

  • Agreed on not taking pain meds ahead of time.  They can thin your blood which makes you bleed more.

Really you just have to grin and bear it.  The bonier the spot the worse it feels.  The one right above my ankle was pretty bad, but the inside of my wrist was kinda tender too.

I'd advise against doing your foot until it is warm and you can wear just flip flops/sandals until healed.  A friend got a tattoo in November and was wearing flip flops while walking around campus.  Talk about cold feet.  : )

  • No advice from me since I am too chicken to get one, but I want to see a pic when you're done!!

  • Pinned Imagethis is what Im getting on my lower back (right side)  in a deep purple so when it fades slightly it will still be dark. I will def share pictures when its done. Im glad you said not to take pain meds bc I knew about the alchohol but I totally would have taken some IBU before going. now I wont. thanks!

  • That's really pretty! And I like the idea of dark purple instead of black :)
