MH and I are flying to Australia in about a month. Our original tickets had us flying Orlando to Denver to San Francisco to Sydney. The layover in San Fran was from 8:33-10:37pm.
I just got an email that our itinerary has been updated. We are now flying Orlando to San Francisco to Sydney. Great! One less layover and we get to leave Orlando a little later. But, our layover in San Francisco now is just 9:21-10:33pm.
Would you be worried about the short layover? Should I be calling them to ask to change it back? We bought the tickets with miles, so I don't know if that has something to do with them changing it...
FWIW, I've experienced missed connections on international flights and delayed baggage due to short connections, so I know these things happen. I could live with a baggage delay because I know they'd get it to us the next day. But a missed connection would really suck because we are catching a separate flight to Cairns the same day we arrive in Sydney (yes we are gluttons for punishment lol.)
Re: flying to australia - layover
The same thing happened to me. Booked using United miles, they changed the flight times, and it left me with too short of a connection in Brisbane. I ended up having to leave a day earlier so that I didn't have to change my flight from Brisbane to Gladstone, which was with QantasLink. I now have a night in Brisbane when we land, so I guess it's not too bad. I asked the rep about connection times and in my case, an hour was too short because we had to go through customs. I think since you aren't going through customs, you have a better chance. However, if anything goes wrong in Orlando, you may be running through the airport! I've done it and made it, but if you have the opportunity to make the transitions a little easier, I probably would.
Also, I'd love to hear all about your trip when you get back! We're heading to Heron Island, Wilson Island, and Lizard Island (with 1 night in Brisbane and Cairns for transit purposes) in August!
Our wedding on Wilson Island!
You have over an hour. Personally, that's plenty for me. And adding the extra flight would just add more chances for delays/canceled flights, etc.
I only worry about shorter layovers coming back from overseas because of the time spent in customs.
I guess I'm nervous because there's only one overseas flight a day. So if we miss it we lose a day of our trip. And I've had that happen before (both coming and going). But you make a really good point about fewer flights meaning fewer chances for things to go wrong.
I will definitely be packing 2 changes of clothes in my carryon. I have had my luggage not arrive with me too many times in the past!
My Ovulation Chart
This exactly.
I live in San Francisco. I fly in and out of SFO at least every two weeks.
I would ABSOLUTELY change that ticket.
I have no idea what time you're slated to fly into SFO, but the truth of the matter is, I've never seen an airport that has so many delays. The location for SFO, while convenient, means it's prone to getting "fogged in" even when the rest of the SF Bay Area is gorgeous (case in point - I drove past SFO today and it was ensconced in fog, even though it was 60+ and sunny in the city).
Also, I have no idea what airline you're flying to SFO, but my guess is United (since Quantas left SFO a while ago). You should double-check to see what terminal the United flight leaves from. Again - my *guess* would be the international terminal, even though it's a United flight, because the plane is likely pretty big. If it's leaving from the international terminal, then you're going to have to schlep it from Terminal 3 to the International terminal, which are as far apart as you can get in SFO, and you're going to have to clear security at the International terminal because none of the terminals are connected.
If both flights are in/out of Terminal 3 (i.e. if you're flying United the entire way), then the connection becomes less dicey, but just know that if you happen to be flying into SFO on a day in which there's bad weather, you can expect your flight to be delayed by 2-3 hours on average - they can only use one of the runways, so rain, fog, etc., make for terrible back-ups. I would absolutely try to change that flight for a longer connection time.
This is exactly how I feel. That's too short of a connection time considering the distance you are flying. I would not feel safe at all.
