Sigh.. ignorant people

Have you guys seen this at all in the news? It's been driving me nuts. A social studies teacher at Steinbrenner invited a Muslim leader to come in and speak to her AP class (among many other religious representatives who have come throughout the year) and there was this uproar among parents and random community members.

When will people realize that Muslim does not equal terrorist? When Timothy Mcveigh blew up the building in Oklahoma City, people didn't turn against young white dudes of whatever his religion was.

I like this reporters succinct, straightforward, and at times sarcastic summary of the incident..

That was a great article! I hadn't heard about this until now, how ridiculous. I watched a few episodes of All-American Muslims and really liked it. Like the reporter said, there are extremists in every religion.

I actually ended up not watching All-American Muslim after I read another article about how they were only representing a certain type of Muslim and that some people in the Muslim community were really disappointed by the show. I still might try to catch an episode but I know how it feels to be stereotyped and it just irritates me so I tend to avoid things like that.

I wonder if these same people realize Timothy McVeigh was a roman catholic and a republican and a member of the NRA. Ted Bundy was Methodist. Dahmer was a member of the Church of Christ.

I could go on.

In fact, most of the people who have "terrorized" the country with serial murders/rapings/bombings etc have been white males.

I have one aunt on perma-email-block b/c she sends the most ridic. emails. Like Obama/Pelosi/whomever came here by alien ship at Roswell and now control the country. Really?!

My aunt (your mom) always says, "Ohhhh, but it's just a JOKE." Okay. Sure. Jokes are jokes. But when you call someone the n-word in your "joke," that's not funny unless you're wearing bed sheets.

Thanks for sharing this article. It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant people can me. I'm still surprised at people who cast broad generalizations about all Muslims based on the actions of a few on the lunatic fringe of the religion. I like to think that we, as a society, are smarter than that, but apparently not everyone is. I applaud the school's stance on the matter and feel like the teacher was totally in the right by bringing in a Muslim leader to teach the class about that religion.

It's so disheartening to see things like that. How people can assume the actions of a few represent the mindset of ALL just baffles me.

In my jury work I've done quite a few terrorism cases. Naturally, in our jury questionnaires/voir dire for those cases we usually have to ask a ton of questions about the juror's attitudes towards Muslims, the religion in general, the Quran, etc, etc. You can imagine some of the responses we get. Somehow, every single time, it shocks me that not only do people feel this way, but they so freely and openly admit it, which just shows they don't even realize there's anything wrong with it. (Of course we want them to be completely honest in this situation, but I'm always just like, holy crap.)

Moving to a Muslim country has really opened my eyes to it even more. Since announcing that we were moving here, the most ignorant comments have come from some of the most unexpected sources among my family. And living here has really shown me that, even in Saudi Arabia, there are many many people who are open-minded and share the same values as most Americans. There will always be a minority of people, in every corner of the earth, that insist that world is black and white while the rest of us can easily see it is anything but.
