Am I crazy for thinking about spending $500 on a vacuum?

We need a new vacuum and I'm considering a Miele because they're supposed to be the best. The one I'm looking at is $549 + tax. Am I crazy or are Mieles really worth the extra cost? I like the fact that they have HEPA filters and claim to have super low dust emissions since we have a crazy dust problem at our house.

Re: Am I crazy for thinking about spending $500 on a vacuum?

  • It is crazy, but I could totally see myself blowing that much money on something like that. Stick out tongue  Guess I'm crazy too!

  • If it is durable it's worth the money. I was lucky enough to get a $600 Dyson for $300. It is going strong 7 years now. Previously I had spent $100 each year on a new vacuum because they clogged and failed and didn't pick up nearly as much. It's worth the money if it lasts and does what you want as far as cleaning and reducing allergines

  • With our cats and dog, I have a feeling if/when we move into a house that's carpeted that I'll want to invest in a serious vacuum cleaner. It's crazy, but I'll probably have to make a conscious effort at setting money aside for it ahead of time.

  • I have the $38 special from walmart and it does a great job for me.  And when it goes out, ha, no loss.  I'll just get another for that price!  Even my old Oreck repairs cost more than that.
  • I thought spending $400 for my Dyson was crazy too, but I did it and so glad I did.

After the first time I used it, I knew it was worth every penny. I have 2 cats and a dog that shed like crazy and even my Electrolux could not keep up. The Dyson did!

  • No you are not!  I love my Meile and they are worth every penny.  There is not another vac out there that even comes close (sorry Dyson owners but they are not even in the same league). We were pitching $100 Hoovers every couple years and we only used it for 2 area rugs.  We can use the Meile on our hardwoos without scratching.  The Meile has an avg. 20+ year life span.  Our dealer offers free labor for the life of the vac, we just have to pay for parts after the warranty is up.  Plus the fact it is the only true sealed HEPA filter, it's money well spent.  My DD has horrible allergies and we have seen improvement since buying it.
  • No.  My Miele is over 10 years old now.  It was gifted to me, and I love it all of these years later.  Totally worth it and I will be buying another one soon.  Oh and mine was an even pricier model, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. :)

  • Then I must be crazy for spending 600$ on my Oreck.
  • If I had the money for it, I'd go get a more expensive vac right now.  Like many PPs said, I am tired of wasting money on the cheaper ones that only last a year or so.  They just can't handle hair.  When I lived with college roomie and we both had long hair... (gag) I was taking the stupid things apart all the time, burning up belts, etc.  Now I would die for one with great upholstery attachments for cleaning dog hair off the furniture.  I had heard good things about one of the Dyson's that is in the $700 range... I too thought it was crazy, but if I had it, I think it would be so worth it!
  • Sometimes you get what you pay for. I would totally splurge on a great vacuum/cleaning appliance if it made the job easier. I would love one of those robot things that does the work for you. I hate cleaning because I feel like I am constantly doing it, especially with a dog who likes to rub himself on our area rugs and sheds all over the floor.
