TTC and planning summer vacation

This might be a silly question but when you were TTC, did you take into consideration anything special when you were planning your holidays. Did you buy trip insurance and hope for the best or did you wait until  during your trip or after to start to TTC?

  • You can't live your life based on TTC. We got pregnant very quickly and had already booked  a trip that would have occurred in the 3rd tri. The whole purpose of the trip was to go diving in Saba so obviously we had to cancel. We have now rebooked for this year. Do what you want to do and if you get pregnant and have to change plans worry about it then. There are just too many factors to consider to try and plan your life around the possibility being pregnant!

  • Yes, we considered it.  We were planning to go to the Olympics in London this summer, but we knew that if we got pregnant right away the trip could be as short as a month away from the due date.  We (reluctantly) decided against the trip and it ended up being the right decision because I got pregnant the first month we tried!

  • It took us over 3 years to successfully conceive, so if we had waited, we never would have went anywhere!  Although I should say we don't usually decide on vacations until 4 - 8 weeks out.  I would go ahead a book and hope to bring home a special "souvenir".

  • We delayed TTC by 6 months because of a planned trip to Australia. But, we are planning a trip to Colorado for 6 months after the Australia trip and Virginia for 2 months after that and won't be delaying TTC due to either of those trips. So I guess my answer is, it depends.

ETA: I don't plan on buying trip insurance for CO. We will go even if I am pregnant. VA we will decide closer to the date if we will fly or drive so I'm not worried about it.

  • We aren't TTC yet, but when the time comes I'm sure it will affect travel if only because we're from different countries and travel to see friends and family every year.

Personally, if there's a trip we really want to take in the near future when we start thinking about kids, I'd hold off on TTC until we were close enough to the trip that we could still go. I mean, if we've got a cruise to Antarctica all planned out, I'd rather wait a couple extra months for a baby than delay something like that. But beyond a major trip like that, I'd just TTC and buy insurance for any "normal" trips.

  • We also are planning to go to the Olympics, but unlike the PP we just decided to time our TTC months to where I could still fly to London.

It sounds a little selfish, but I still want us to be able to have lives while TTC and I don't necessarily think we should rearrange our entire travel plans when we aren't even pregnant yet.

  • We've been TTC for a year with no luck. If we'd waited, we wouldn't have gone to Italy, Switzerland, or on our upcoming trip to Spain. Buy traveler's insurance so that if you have to cancel for any reason, you're ok. Good luck!

  • I have a trip to NY planned in May and we may start ttc in March.  I think it should still be okay to travel during this time if it's 1st trimester.  I wouldn't plan any big trips during 3rd tri but I usually only plan ahead 4-6 months anyways.
  • DH and I made a list of places we wanted to go before TTC....we did all of them and then started trying.....we were lucky and got pregnant the first month we tried.  We were planning on a trip in Feb, but put off booking it until closer to the trip because we were trying....I'm glad we never booked it because I feel like crap all the time and def don't want to travel right now.

  • We're going to start TTC in March, and are booking a trip to Australia in late August/early Sept.  It's the only time I can take more than a week off from work.  I'll suck up the cost of rescheduling, or booking an alternative destination if I do not feel comfortable flying that far whilst pregnant.

  • We made a realistic list of trips we wanted to go on prior to getting pregnant and went on those trips over the past 5 years.  When we returned from our last one (China) we started TTC.

We then planned our next trip as one that I would be comfortable going on if I was pregnant (to Hawaii).  We made sure the hotel and airfare were cancelable, which was a good thing because we did end up canceling our trip due to pregnancy complications.  Luckily we were able to rebook it and we went two weeks ago!
