DH and I just saw this movie. Holy crap- Shailene Woodley was actually good! I've only seen her on Secret Life (so forgive me if she's been great elsewhere and I just haven't seen it). I had to stop watching that show after maybe season one, in part because I couldn't even stand her voice not to mention the poor acting and cheesy script writing. So color me surprised.
I can't say for sure that expecting her to get an Oscar nom would have occurred to me without reading it here first ( I did think that about George Clooney as I watched it though) but she was definitely good. There was one particular scene that I found quite powerful and I think sometimes people get nominated that way- for one great scene, so it would have made sense.
ETA: I googled her after posting this ( I really don't keep up with her at all!) and see that she's up for a SAG award. Good for her.
Re: The Descendants and Shailene Woodley (no spoilers)
I'd only seen half an episode of Secret Life before seeing the movie, and I also was not looking forward to seeing her in the movie...but she totally surprised me. Maybe she can do great things when given great material.
ETA: I hope that she chooses her next projects wisely and doesn't go down the route of a cheesey romcom or drama (like "New Years Eve" or a Nicholas Sparks adaptation).

I thought it was really good! So in between great and just good I guess. lol I tend to like George Clooney and thought he was great. I liked seeing him with his daughters (I always like a film or show that highlights a relationship between a man and his kids). As far as the major plot goes, I actually didn't know for sure in several instances what was going to happen so it kept me interested.

I've said on here before that I thought she was amazing. She definitely held her own opposite George Clooney.
I thought the movie was really good. I was pretty uncomfortable in the theater, though, because I sobbed for most of the movie. I would rather have watched it at home for that reason.

I thought it was very good. So many movies would have handled this subject matter with overly dramatic tearful confessions and hugs and swelling music. This was handled much more quietly and delicately. Plus there was humor, so it wasn't *all* sad (although the sad parts, omg, so so sad). And the Hawaii sub-story was interesting. Hawaii was like another character in the movie.
But it's fine to wait for DVD. The Hawaiian scenery is gorgeous, but I wouldn't say it's a big-screen must or anything.

I loved it, but I also tend to like the subtle and "quiet" type of movies. It felt very real, which can be a little difficult given the subject matter (read: lots of emotion). Like pp, I also liked the Hawaii sub-story.
And George Clooney can act a little.
