Hi everyone!
So as everyone knows, the economy has been really rotten. My dad has owned his cabinet business for 25+ years, and he has been very proud to be his own boss. Next week, he will be closing the doors (he will still do cabinets on the side, but not as a main job) because he has gotten a new job. My uncle offered him a position as a manager in the auto division on his company. Things are going to be much better (i.e., food on the table, able to keep the house, etc) so we are really excited, but I can tell he's a little anxious about it... probably because he's 55 and starting a new job, got the job because of my uncle, working for someone else/needing approval for what he does.
I'm trying to think of something to get him to kind of... let him know he's going to do great, that we appreciate his willingness to try something new, and most importantly that he's not a failure for having to close the shop. Anyone have any ideas? I believe he will have an office, but I'm not sure if it's just a cubicle or an office office. I was thinking I would get him a business card holder (like one to put business cards in that he gets from other people) that's engraved with his name and something cheesy like "world's best dad" or something.
Any ideas would be much appreciated!!!
Kristen
Re: What to get my dad for his new job
I'd stay away from the "world's best dad" reference in a work setting.
Sorry, I can't think of anything. I'd just try harder to stay away from patronizing. Like I am sure you want.
I'm not sure what kind of job he will have - is it more "hands on" (mechanic) or more corporate? Will he need a briefcase? You can get inexpensive (but good) ones made of nylon, etc. Or a business card holder with his name on it.
I think a nice frame is a good idea. I would not have one that says "world's best dad," b/c I think that is something a 10 year old would get their dad (no offense). But most people have family photos on their desks, and a nice frame looks better and more professional than a photograph tacked onto the wall.
One year I got DH a desk pad with "cutouts" for photos.
How much are you willing to spend? You could get a photograph of his old shop (part of his history, which he should be proud of), and put it in a frame. If you want to (and are able to) spend more $ you you can find a local artist who wil make a drawing of it (pen and ink, charcoal, etc.). Google your area and "home portraits"
Maybe a gift certificate to a nice mensware store in your area? He might have to revamp his wardrobe if he works in an office vs. cabinet shop. I would put the GC in the new briefcase with a power pen set. Top off with a nice card you know he would appreciate.
Also, maybe a good lunchbox/tupperware set for him to bring with him for lunch?
You are sweet to think of him in his new job.
These are all great ideas guys, thanks for them!
I like the idea of the photo of the shop.. and a photo of us (prob from the wedding!)
I'm sorry I'm late posting, our internet has been wacky today!
