Open houses

Today we went to 6 or so open houses.  The last one was irritating as the agent was over an hour late.  The listing said 1-4.  We were there at 1 and came back at 2 and the agent still wasnt there.  As we were leaving the neighborhood we noticed him putting out his signs.

On the plus we met 2 agents we want to talk more with and maybe work with one of them

My question... If when you go to an open house the front door isnt open do you knock/ring or just walk in?

Re: Open houses

  • We found in IA when we were looking that RARELY were agents at a listed open house. It might show as an open house on their site but I was informed that unless the open is then also carried in the local paper that there really isn't one. Ridiculous practice, I guess every market has their quirks.

I kind of would do a knock + open the door at the same time.

Good news that you found potentially two agents that you might like to work with!
  • I can't answer your question but I wonder if the current owners know that their agent is a flake and wasn't there on time?
  • I tried not to go to an open house right when it started because I figured that's when everyone else would be there, especially if it looked desirable.  I never encountered one where the agent wasn't there when they said they would be.  If the door was closed I would just open it and walk in!

  • Ugh, sorry for the late agent :( That is embarrassing.

I am glad you met 2 agents that you may want to work with, that is great. Don't be afraid to call and ask if you can have coffee or something. Let them know you are searching for a Realtor and meeting with others before deciding who to work with. They will be delighted at the chance to meet you.

When I have an open house, a lot of times I have the door closed because of the heat or AC. If it is clear it is an open house (open house sign at the walk, rider on the sign), feel free to open the door and come in. I know people are often cautious about this so if you have any question, just knock :)

    Good luck & have fun!!!

Life is a roller coaster, enjoy it!
