**Bali** (or any other dual citizenship holders

Did you have to give up your US Citizenship when you got your Australian?

I could swear that we can hold dual citizenship, but my boss's H is American and she said he HAD to give up the US to get Aussie?

Re: **Bali** (or any other dual citizenship holders

  • The US 'allows' dual citizenship in the sense they turn a blind eye to it. You have to continue to enter and leave the US on your US passport. I know people who have dual Australian/UK citizenship so obviously Australia allows it too. You won't have to give up your US citizenship.

  • No, I did not have to give up my US citizenship.

    As far as I know the US doesn't know that I also hold an Australian passport.  When I travel to/from the US/Oz I carry both passports.  I use the Aussie one leaving and returning to Oz and the US one leaving and returning to the US.

    The whole process was incredibly easy and cost less than $300, so it will end up being cheaper and easier than applying for a resident return visa every 5 years.

  • All of that works for me.  Especially the only $300 part.

  • I have dual which is allowed by England and USA. Some countries don't allow for dual.

  • After a bit more research it looks like OZ didn't allow dual until 1997 or 2002.  Or I could just be reading it all incorrectly.

    I'll just go with Bali's Don't ask Don't tell method (for the US).

    I have no ideacwhen it came in but I still have both passports! Hopefully they won't change the price before you can apply. That's good that you can apply next year, after you have it you don't have to worry about visas again!

    ::cough:: fuckyouNorway ::cough::

    Well, if you're born dual that's fine, but you can't naturalize to become Norwegian (while retaining your old citizenship).

    There are a few exceptions to this, and I have devised an elaborate and expensive scheme that may or may not work.  If we settle in Norway I just might try it.

  • I have dual American/Israeli citizenship now and sometime this year (hopefully), I'll get UK citizenship so I'll have 3 passports. All the countries involved have a don't ask, don't tell and there's no way for the US to know what other passports I hold. I have to enter and leave each country on that passport and then enter the next country on that passport. And if something goes horribly wrong while I'm in the UK, I can't run to the American embassy - while I'm in a country that I'm a citizen of, that's my primary citizenship (although again, there's no way they would necessarily know).

    I know tons of people with 2-3 passports actually and no one ever reported a problem with it.
