Sending a box of non approved carry on items - help

So my family and I are going to Hawaii in a few weeks and the hotel we are staying at said it was okay to send a box ahead of time since we are doing carry on only.  It will be my parents, my brother, and my 5 year old and I.

I am planning on filling the box with stuff that we can't take on our carry ons.  This is what I have so far:

  • a spray can of sunscreen per person, plus one bottle of lotion since the actual lotion goes further.
  • a bottle of aloe vera
  • a bottle for everyone to share of shampoo and conditioner
  • a reg. size tube of toothpaste, plus training toothpase for DS
  • a jar of peanut butter and a squeezy thing of jam (for DS, he's constantly hungry)
  • several of those tube things of squeeze applesauce
  • regular bottle of lotion
  • can of shaving cream

Anything else anyone can think of that wouldn't be allowed on carry ons that I should be packing?  Essential wise or helpful wise.  I don't care so much about not being able to bring it back, it is what it is.

TIA

Re: Sending a box of non approved carry on items - help

  • If I didn't already have it at home and had to go out and buy it, I'd just buy all that stuff when I got there.  When you factor in the trip to the store, and the shipping cost, how much are you really saving?  Now, if you already have all this stuff at home, I'd go ahead and ship it.

Depending on how large a package they will accept, I'd throw in a few juice boxes, 8 oz bottles of water, wine, alcohol, etc.

  • Why carry on only?

I'm assuming this stuff is all full sized (read: not light) so wouldn't 1 checked bag be cheaper than shipping all this stuff?  Or even buying it once you got there (at probably 50% more than the price on the mainland).

Granted I don't know the price of 1 checked bag or shipping a box.

  • Just buy it out there. I would be very nervous to send all that could potentially leak everywhere, it would be a nightmare. Just go to a store when you first get there, I assume you would to get bread for the pb&J and buy it all.

Edit: Or, order it online through amazon and have it sent to your hotel. I wouldn't pack it yourself.

  • Just buy it there-your hotel should have shampoo, conditioner and lotion, and sunscreen/aloe were less expensive in Hawaii than at home (for me).  Other items may be a bit more but not enough more to cover the shipping costs.

  • I'm going to just echo what everyone else said...why on earth would you ship all that?  You know people use sunscreen and toothpaste in Hawaii right?  It's not all that much more expensive than on the mainland, and it will certainly be less expensive to buy it there, or to check it in a bag, as opposed to shipping it.  If you must send it, the idea to get it from Amazon is a good one.  There are grocery stores, drug stores, big box stores (like Target and Walmart) all over the islands.  You won't have any problem finding those items in any brand you want.

  • I really don't understand this. Just check a bag or buy it once you get there. So much hassle for so little benefit.
"We tend to be patronizing about the poor in a very specific sense, which is that we tend to think,
  • How much is it going to cost to send everything there?

We live in a somewhat HCOL area so we didn't find things to be that more expensive in Hawaii.  My suggestion is to just go to a grocery store (Safeway, etc) and buy those items there.  If you don't have a discount card for that particular chain, just sign up there and see if any of those items are on sale.

Another option is to just check those items in a box.  We checked our wine from Napa and it made it home safely.  We just had to pay the baggage fee of $25.

  • maybe it's just me but the shipping cost plus the cost of all of the left over product that will be thrown out seems that it would be much more than just buying small ones and each person having it in their carry on or checing one bag (which is ususally free). and how do you know it will arrive on time unless you spend a fortune and fed ex it? and how long will you be there for? are full sizes of everything necessary? it takes me 2 weeks to go through a small 3.2oz tube of toothpaste...

  • Agree w/pp, I would just buy stuff when you get there or check one bag that you can put everything into.

When I went to Hawaii, we bought a lot of stuff at the ABC stores. They are everywhere and had reasonable prices.

  • I definitely agree that checking one bag (in which all of that stuff would fit) is going to be far cheaper and more convenient than shipping a box to Hawaii.  If you ship you risk leaks or a delayed or lost package.  An added bonus to just checking it is that you no longer have to juggle too many carry on bags, maybe just your personal item since now you can put your clothes in the suitcase along with all of this stuff.
  • Well, it's only $5 to ship a box, and yes between us, we already have ALL that stuff, so we are just taking it from our bathrooms and throwing it in a box and sending it for $5, not buying it all.

A checked bag is $20 each way, so that would be $40 even if we used everything while we are there, we would still have to pay $20 to send back an empty suitcase.  Plus, in my experience the baggage carriers are much worse than USPS would be.

It's only $5 and because we already HAVE all that stuff, it's an obvious choice to me.  If we carry on only and then buy all that there, we are still:

    1) paying more over there vs. here in my past experiences as everything is considerably more expensive, even at those cheapy ABC stores, and 2) we would have to leave any left over behind regardless because we are carry on only, and could not bring it back.

Hope that validates what I am doing, not that I feel like I need to or anything but just explaining.

Thanks anyways.  I guess I am covered with what I already came up with on my own.  Especially since no one even suggested anything other than why in the world would I be doing THAT?

So you are going to take the stuff you have, and leave it all there when you leave? And have to buy it new when you get home? Also, I would be worried, as I said before, about it all leaking.

  • That seems like a lot of things to fit into one of the small pre-paid shipping boxes.  Are you sure all of that will fit? (It seems like the PB jar would be too wide on it's own.)

If you are going this route I'd pack everything in ziplock bags to contain the mess if they leak.  I'd probably also make sure that none of the items were brand new (i.e., open them and use an ounce or so first) so that there is less chance of them leaking all over everything.

I'd also pack a second box flat in my carry-on and a bunch more ziplock bags so that I could ship stuff home.

Who are you shipping with that it's only costing 5 dollars?

  • Well, FWIW, I have one of the small boxes and have so far fit 3 spray sunscreens, 8 applesauce squeezers from TJ, an 18 ox plastic jar of PB, 1/2 tube full of the kid sized toothpaste, a bottle of lotion, a small can of shaving cream, 1/2 tube full of toothpaste, and still have lots of room left in the small box that is $5.95 to ship.  It's priority mail and should be there in 3 days.

HTH for anyone considering saving some money that also wants to just do carry-on and not deal with the possibilites of lost luggage (happened to me TWICE) or pay the $40+ that it seems to be costing these days.

So you didn't actually want any opinions other than what to put in the box, correct? Just double checking.

I would take my chances and check a bag. Or buy it there. But I also have no interest in receiving a box filled with exploded liquids.

Also, I am pretty sure the post office asks if you have liquids in it when you mail it, and it has to be packaged a certain way. And if it leaks it may not arrive at all.

  • How much squeeze apple sauce are you bringing?  I never had a problem bringing the GoGo Squeeze, as long as you aren't bringing the large ones from some of the other brands you are fine.  I would buy the rest of the stuff there.  Oh, I also carry cereal bars.
