Re: Costa Cruise Settlement
I honestly don't know what I would expect monitarily. I guess it depends on if I was easily able to get off the ship, do I have any PTSD type issues, was I injured, were any of my family members hurt, etc.
But if everything was ok with me (no long term damage), I would probably take the money and be done with it. I was listening to the Today Show a few days ago and they were saying if you want to seek more damages, the legal process was a nightmare and I would rather not deal with that. Especially since it is in another country half way around the world.
I agree with this completely. I think it depends on the individual experience... It's a tough call. It could be enough, but if there is any long term damage, 14000 probably wouldn't cut it.
But then again, if you do the math, that's somewhere between 40 and 60 million dollars (not counting the reimbursement for travel costs) they are paying out to people. That number seems much more appropriate. So I guess I would say that it is a decent payout.

Absolutely!

Completely agree with this. It would really depend on the situation and how traumatized I was but if I were one of the lucky ones that got off pretty easily then I would just take the money and run. I wouldn't want to have to keep reliving the nightmare over and over again.
This!!!!!
When I last heard about the reimbursement they were saying that they would refund the guests for the cruise they were just on and give them 30% off their next trip. $14,000 is a much better payoff.
Did they ever figure out what caused the ship to sink? There were rumors that the captain and crew were all drunk.
*I think* the ship hit land (very similar to the Titanic I believe except it was in shallow water so it didn't sink). Supposedly they brought the ship closer to the coast because a crew member was from that city or something whacky like that.
Poor judgement all around, really is what caused it. Plus the Captain supposedly wasn't on board the ship when he should have been. It's all super shady.
This! The captain said he "fell" into a lifeboat and that's why he wasn't on board the ship to help save people.
