Lasik doctor recs?

DH has been seriously considering getting Lasik and was wondering if anyone here had any recommendations for doctors.

Also, what was your experience with it? Did it hurt?  What was your recovery time?  Any side-effects?  How much did it cost (if you don't mind sharing)?  What was your pre-surgery prescription (ie 20-20 etc.)?

Anything you are willing to share would be greatly appreciated :)

  •  Page Ksparks, since she just had this done a few weeks ago, so she can tell you how she's doing & what the going rate is.

I went to Dr. Byrd at the Byrd Eye Clinic in Allen Park.  I don't know if he's still there, since I had this done in Jan. 2003.  At that time I paid I think $2,500, so I don't know the cost now.

I am the biggest wimp when it comes to my eyes, I use to be able to have trouble even putting in Visine, and I only wore glasses because I could stand to try to put contacts in my eyes.  That being said, if I can do it, any one can, I sucked it up & did it.  I didn't hurt.  I do remember having to put eye drops in my eyes the week leading up.  They numbed my eyes & was done super quick.  My mom got to watch it being done on a monitor in another room & she couldn't believe how quick it went.  I did get some valuium too.  My parents took me home & I rested & stayed out of light the rest of the day.  The next morning I looked outside & could see things from a distance that I couldn't see w/o my glasses before!  I don't remember what my eyes were like before, but it was great after!

The only thing that I had after were white spots that I could see for the first week or two when I was driving at night, so I tried not too.

It was the best thing I've done, well worth the money.  The only thing they said is that I may need reading glasses once I hit 40, ok, I can live w/that.  Sure beats wearing them all the time, I don't have to worry about them getting wet outside, etc.

  • I went to Dr Rahmani.  I had it done in 2005.  Best thing I ever did.  I had horrible eyesight it was -8.50 in both eyes.  I still have 20/20 now.  Not sure if his pricing is the same now since I had it done a while ago but his price was according to how much correction you needed and then lifetime corrections if needed were included in pricing.  I would have slight blurry vision upon waking for about a week but as soon as I put moisturizing drops in it would clear up.

  • I went to Robert Clark at the Clark Eye Center back in 2003.  I think his only office now is in Brighton.  I don't remember exactly how much it was, but I'm sure prices have changed anyway.

Like the pp's, it was one of the best decisions I've ever made.  I don't remember what my prescription was, but I was pretty much blind - I couldn't even see the time on my alarm clock without getting right up next to it.

As far as the surgery went, my mom took me in the morning, I had some valium (which didn't seem to do anything - but I didn't have much anxiety so maybe it just prevented me from getting worked up), then they did the surgery.  My mom took me home and I slept for a few hours.  When I woke up, my eyes were still a little fuzzy, but by a few hours later they were practically perfect.

I did have one side effect - the doctor said I had the worst case of dry eye that he'd ever seen.  I had to put drops in probably 10 times a day for a few months.  Eventually, the dryness went away though.  Even though it was super annoying and frustrating to have to put up with the dryness, I still wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

  • I got my surgery done in April 2004 at Henry Ford Optimeyes and it is one of the best things I have ever done.  I had VERY poor vision prior to the surgery, the kind where the alarm clock was blurry in the morning.  I also have a bad astigmatism.  At that time, it was $1500 for both eyes, but I think it has gone up since then.  I literally could see as soon as the surgery was over, but they give you something to help you sleep so that you are not using your eyes for the first 8 or so hours after the surgery.  I had no pain.  My main side effect was a little eye dryness that I found was easily relieved by using Systane eye drops (these eye drops are thicker and last longer than Visine).  I don't remember the name of the doc who did my surgery, but I am alway pleased with my Henry Ford experience.

  • Thanks ladies :)  My good friend just had it done last week so it's kind of renewed his interest in it so we'll see!
