XP: Tell me about your fav vaction/destination in Africa?

I'll be living in Cape Town for a year and want to start planning a trip outside of S. Africa, but I don't really know where to begin as to which other countries I want to try to visit. Based on what others have said that have done the position I'll be doing they did a lot of long weekend trips, which I'm looking forward to. I'll be on somewhat of a budget, but I'm hoping that my H and I can get somewhere for a  week at one point. My H mentioned Madagascar, but I have never even looked into visiting there. Also, do you know of any special websites or what the easiest way is to go about searching for flights within Africa? Thanks!

  • I have been to Mauritius and the Seychelles. Mauritius will be the shorter flight from CPT, but I personally thought the Seychelles were amazing! Mauritius, IMO, would be a great long weekend getaway, though. It's a little more reasonable in price. We flew South African Airways to Mauritius and their website shows a lot of options. We flew Air Seychelles from Mauritius to the Seychelles, but Air Seychelles also has flights from JNB.

    Our wedding on Wilson Island!

  • My dad is from South Africa and we will be there in a few days to visit for a month with all our relatives. My dad has decided to stay for another three weeks and is going to Namibia. Relatives have said it is very beautiful. It is mainly desert like and there is a great animal park.

Here is the link to some pictures of Namibia that he sent me when he was trying to convince the H and me to come along with him. We can't go because a month is already a ridiculous amount of time to be away from work.

The park is called the Etosha National Park. Link: http://www.namibian.org/travel/namibia/etosha.htm

South African Airways and Mango airways have loads of flights into and out of Cape Town. Check those sites for air travel.

I would LOVE to visit Madagascar, Mauritius or the Seychelles. I had a friend that lived on Madagascar for about 6 months years ago and she raved about it.

  • You must go to Namibia. Must. Do you camp? If so there is a four day hiking trek through Fish River Canyon that I'd love to do if I didn't have an aversion to sleeping outside. If not, Windhoek and the cities along the coast are supposed to be really nice. Skeleton Coast, whale watching from shore, etc. etc. I am dying to get there.
  • When I went to Swaziland we stayed at this place http://www.biggameparks.org/3parks_mkhaya.html.

We stayed in the stone camp area, which has running water, a shower, and a toilet, but the walls are not fully enclosed.  I loved it and hope to back with DH some day.

  • We did Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe side) and had a fantastic time.  The falls were amazing, and we really enjoyed the town and people in Vic Falls.  I would highly recommend the flight of angels helicopter tour over the falls and the rain forest walk on the Zim side of the falls.  It's only a short (< 2 hour) flight from Joburg on South African Airways.

. well I don't really camp (except in Haiti out of necessity) but I'm not opposed to it. I'm always down for new experiences!
  • Madagascar was fantastic, but if I go back to spend more time, I would want to do a multi-day trekk in one of the national parks. We just did a day hike, and our guide said we were very lucky to get to see as many lemurs as we did. Also, we couldn't get very far from the park entrance, so it would have been nice to get to some of the more remote sites. However, if you're not one for camping, an overnight trek might not be the best option.

On a less remote note, we went snorkeling on Nosy Komba (near Nosy Be) and it was incredible! It was like being in an aquarium! There are quite a few good dive sites around Madagascar, but I would be very cautious given the economic problems. It would probably be wise to bring your own gear and maybe have dive insurance in case something happens.

My only other Africa trip was Kruger and Mozambique. Driving around Kruger on our own was a lot of fun and very affordable, and you might even qualify for the local rates as an SA resident. In Tofo, Mozambique we got to snorkel with the whale sharks. The diving was also good, but it would have been good to have an advanced certification so we could do the deeper manta dive (everyone we talked to said it was fantastic). It would be tough to do Tofo on a weekend, though, since it's a full day's drive from Maputo. You can fly to Inhambane, but I don't think those flights are cheap!
