I recently started taking a prescription drug that could be tested for in a urine drug screen. Obviously, I am under a doctor's supervision and am taking it the way I am supposed to. I am going to need a urine drug test soon for school (clinical placement) and possibly any new jobs I apply for. While I am hoping this prescription is short-term, how do I go about not "failing" the drug test? I'd rather not disclose a ton of personal information to a school/employer if I don't have to!

Don't drink the water.

It has been awhile since I drug tested for a job, but they required prior to that you disclose the medications you are on. That way they know in advance if you test positive for something that would come up to make you fail. I'm sure a note from your doctor, etc would be enough to cover that situation.
I agree, due to the fact that is personal medical information your employer/school would be notified only if you fail to provide proof of your presciption.
I'm on a controlled substance that allegedly shows up on drug screens. I'm also a teacher who has moved a lot so I've had a ton of drug tests. Every single time they have told me not to worry about it, and they will call if its an issue when the results are back. Then, I can bring in a doctors note.
I've never been called. All have come back perfectly fine.
As long as you are not overdosing on the medication (which you said you were taking it as prescribed), you should be fine. Drug screens usually allow for a certain percentage for prescription drugs.
Plus, the lab will usually contact your doctor if something shows up on the drug screen. For instance, our employees go to a Concentra Medical Center to take drug screens. If it shows a positive at the center, it gets sent on to the lab. The lab does a more thorough testing, and sometimes it will lead to a MRO "Medical Review". There the lab is contacting your doctor's to find out if you're on any prescriptions.
TTC since June 2012
I actually sell drug testing for a local clinic (15 years) I sold drug testing for a national laboratory as well. I suppose some facilities may have you disclose your meds on the Chain of Custody form, however in both of my employment situations they did not have folks write down their meds on the Chain of Custody.
If you test positive for prescription medications you will be contacted by a Medical Doctor who is called a Medical Review Officer (MRO) He will discuss your test results and verify your prescription with the pharmacy. When the prescription is verified, the drug test will be reported out as negative to your school. This is because the drug is not being taken illegally.
The lab doesn't call the pharmacy or your doctor. The lab reports the drug screen results to the MRO only.
Good luck!
