thoughts on Teen Mom finances.

so, we always discuss the fact that these girls are clearly getting paid for the show yet always "cry poverty" (for lack of a better phrase)....

does MTV lock up the money in an account for the kids? could that be why they dont' have the money?

or do they have to continue living according to a certain standard?

just wondering what you think, or have you read this info anywhere?

Re: thoughts on Teen Mom finances.

  • I always wonder about that. My assumption is that it's totally scripted. They will have random expensive things like nails, hair highlights, phones, etc, and then not be able to pay for their rent.

  • I kind of think/hope against hope that MTV is putting the money into an untouchable account for the kids. Or at least an account that the girls can't touch until after the show is done taping to maintain a little bit of reality to the show.

I do know that kids who do tv/commercials  get money put directly into an account in their name... idk if its a NYS requirement, or a federal one, but it had been done to protect kids who earned a lot of money while young and the parents spent it all... thats why i hope some is locked up for the kids!

This!! I definitely agree that I think the show is scripted to make it more interesting...These girls look like they have their hair and nails done every week. I know Chelsea seems to change her hair and so does Leah...I am hoping that they have put money into a college fund for their children...The last episode was about Corey wanting to buy a truck. I think they need to worry about other things than cars, nails, etc...

  • I think MTV probably puts some into an account for the kids and then the girls get paid. But I agree, they all seem to have their nails done and own nice phones. They should be saving it all for the future when MTV isn't following them anymore.
  • I always thought it was scripted to look like the girls are struggling since most teen moms who don't star on a TV show do need assistance and they want normal teen moms to relate. But when Kailyn gets public assistance that I'm sure her Teen Mom salary would disqualify from it makes me wonder just where the money's going.

  • I read a while back that they get at least $100K a year or more but they sign contracts that they can't tell anyone about it and have to play the poor card while on the show. At the end of the it said MTV reps denied this so who knows.
  • I wonder if they are provided with some small fund for hair/nail upkeep to maintain their appearance for the sake of the show?

  • There are tabloid stories about how the moms are buying houses and cars, etc. etc.  I wouldn't be surprised if they really are broke because they blew it all.
    This is my siggy.
  • I think the majority of it is scripted at this point.  I read somewhere that they make $20k an episode.  For all we know the houses/cars they show them driving aren't even where they really live or what they really drive.  The stuff we see could just be their 'set'' while they film, then once they 'get off work' they go to their real homes.

The only Teen Mom that I think doesn't try to act poor is Maci because she always has pretty nice houses that she rents.

This.  And maybe the moms get a stipen every month.  It might explain the hair and nails but being unable to pay the rent.

  • Well it's a "research" based show, so I think they try to keep it as natural as it would have been had they not been getting paid and the cameras were just there to observe there lives. I can only imagine the contract stipulates they either get the money at the end of filming per year or at the end of their contract, however long that might be, or they have to keep purchases off camera. I think in someone like Macy and Jo's situations (TM 2) their families already seem to have money so that's why they have nicer homes and cars right now during filming.

As for the girls getting their nails and hair done.. Idk, I suppose it could be the money from the show, but honestly most people I know (including alot of family members) are constantly getting their nails done and get their hair done more than they probably should, and they really don't have the money to spend on it, but when you don't have alot of money you try to make yourself feel better by making yourself "look" better? Just a theory. Plus these girls are on TV so they probably feel alot more pressure to have those things done more often for the cameras and millions of people watching.

So is it total reality? No, but I think MTV is just trying to keep showing their lives as they should have been had MTV not intervened, so they can in turn be as "real" as possible.
