Caroline * Elance ?s

I have a few questions for you.

How is that working for you? How do you get paid? How do the taxes work?

I signed up a while ago but havent done anything. I am thinking about trying it out to earn some extra money but wanted to find out how things worked before jumping in.

Re: Caroline * Elance ?s

  • Yes, I am still doing it. I have two regular clients who give me 10-20 hours week depending (sometime I don't get any) in addition to managing the conference for my old job. (I'm more overwhelmed than ever working 30+ hours from home some weeks!)

You can choose hourly or project jobs. I prefer hourly. Most jobs require that you have a tracker with screenshots turned on when you work and at the end of the week on a Sunday you submit your timesheet and you get paid. The client is required to give Elance a valid form of payment and if they don't release payment it is automatically released 12 days after the timesheet is submitted. Most clients submit payment when they receive the timesheet - they review it to make sure it's correct. I believe if you run into an issue with someone not paying you then there is a dispute center. Also, if a client's account is not set up with payment, the tracker will tell you and say that you are not required to keep working until they have valid payment. Elance also takes out a fee.

As far as taxes, Elance generates a 1099 for you. I'm actually not quite sure what's going on right now though as in my account it says no one has submitted one. One of my clients is from Norway so he wouldn't have to but I'm not sure what's going on with the other. I'm trying to figure out how to declare my earnings (as you have to) but on Turbotax it requires an employer id number, which I don't have so I'm still looking into that. But, it's very legitimate and all taken care of by Elance.

I think it's awesome. I started about a year ago and I'm now in the top 100 admin professionals. It's easy to build a reputation. Most jobs pay less than an office job  and you have to be willing to work for less in the beginning to build up your reputation but it's great. You also have to devote a lot of time to it in order to make your profile look attractive and submitting proposals for jobs so people will start hiring you.
