Budapest Recommendations?
DH is in training in Budapest this week and I'm flying to spend the weekend (the Th/Fri Saudi weekend anyway) with him. Never been, only have two days. Any can't miss things to recommend?
Re: Budapest Recommendations?
I was just there two weeks ago for a weekend. As far as sightseeing, we enjoyed going up the Buda side to the Magyar National Gallery to get the panoramic views of the Pest side. The basilica is not to be missed, particularly as there's only a 'suggested donation' fee!
We also enjoyed riding Tram 2, which can take you from the Great Market Hall past Gresham Palace to the Parliament. It's quite convenient as there are lots of jumping off points. I recommend stopping to view the memorial to the Jewish families who were massacred during WWII, which is a line of stone shoes at the edge of the Danube--both fitting and moving.
Beyond sights, there are many lovely cafes around Budapest. We found ourselves stopping quite frequently for warm drinks and seemingly every place we went was lovely and inexpensive. A particularly stunning cafe is Cafe Parisi, which is inside of Alexander's, a book and wine-seller (Andr?ssy ?t 39, Budapest , Pest, District 6). The food was just okay and service was meh, but it's worth it to eye the painted ceiling and enjoy the ambiance.
Enjoy!
