Getting Networked - Volunteering/Groups
Hi everyone! My husband and I moved to the Boston area this Fall from out of state (MN). I work from home and am having a hard time getting connected with people in the area. We don't have family or friends here, and I'm starting to feel very disconnected! Do you have any suggestions for ways to get networked? Would love some volunteering ideas/places or other groups you can think of that would help. The only place we are making friends is through our church, but I'm only 22 and most the people are older than me.
Hope to hear back! PS we are in Wakefield, MA and love the area so far...
Re: Getting Networked - Volunteering/Groups
Welcome to the area and to the board!
I always recommend BSSC to people if they're at all into playing sports (even if that "sport" is just dodge ball or something
). DH and I play in their volleyball leagues and he recently went up to Stowe on one of their ski trips.
You can find volunteer opportunities on VolunteerMatch.
What other kinds of activities or hobbies are you into? I know people often recommend looking for groups on Meetup.com, but I don't have any personal experience with it.
Welcome, I also recommend volunteerboston.org
I've had good luck with meetup.com so far.
Rock, funny you mention BSSC. Baltimore did a spin-off that's been equally successful, and I loved it! Missamber, if you're even remotely into sports, it's a great way to meet people and have a lot of fun.
Welcome!

Thanks everyone for the ideas. The BSSC looks great! My hubs has been wanting to play volleyball since we got here -- he plays in tourneys.
I will definitely look into the volunteering websites you provided. That is very helpful. I'm also thinking of joining a gym. I know some people meet a lot of people through classes that way! There is a Curves and a few gyms around here. Not a huge fan of Curves, but might look into it.
Again, thanks! And, if you have more ideas I would love to hear them:)
Does he have a Yankee rating yet? Maybe I'll see him on the court! The volleyball community here is great. It's how DH and I met a lot of our friends when we first moved back to the area (I'm from here but we met and lived in the S.F. Bay Area for many years). It's definitely harder to make new friends as an adult but, hobbies are a great thing to bond over
Hey everyone! Again thanks for all the great tips. I have found a promising group on Meetup for 20 something women that I'm going to attend in the next couple weeks. I'm really excited!!
Rock-n-Voll, he doesn't have a Yankee rating yet! Hopefully in the next month or so he'll start playing again. He just took on a new job so it's been busy.
