Suggestions for long weekend trip from Hudson Valley, NY

My husband was working on our taxes this weekend, and realized that he made a mistake when he filed last year, and we're going to amend and get back about $1000. In our house, tax money is our travel money. This year's tax return is scheduled to go towards our trip to CA this summer, and I think we're on track for that trip without adding in the extra $1K. Sooo, of course, I started thinking of planning another trip.

I want to go somewhere over President's Day weekend (DH is a teacher, so travel time is limited, unless it's summer break). This year he's off Friday 2/17 - Monday 2/20. I would LOVE to go somewhere warm and veg out at an all-inclusive for a few days, but looking at flights, and with the dates being so close, it doesn't look feasible. I also considered picking a city/place in the US that we want to go and spending a few days there, but even then, I can't find flights for less than $4-500.

So, I was thinking maybe we should go somewhere within driving distance to save on the airfare, and just do it up a lot bigger than we normally would for a long weekend (in other words, nicer/fancier hotel, more expensive dinners, etc...). The problem is, I can't decide where to go. One thought I had was to go to Atlantic City and stay at the Waterclub. I've never been to AC, though DH has. We've spent a decent amount of time in Boston and NYC, and we go to Vermont every year in the fall (though, I wouldn't be opposed to any of these places if there was a great place to stay, or something that I couldn't pass up).

Anyway, sorry that I'm rambling! Anyone have any great spots within a 4 hour drive from the Hudson Valley (we live about 1.5 hours north of NYC)? Or, anyone know of any great travel deals for that weekend?

  • Is Newport too far?  That would be my choice for a romantic weekend.
  • If you like winter sports/activities, the Poconos could be a good option...there are tons of resort options in that area.

  • I agree Newport, RI is nice. And lots to do.

How about the North Conway, NH area. Jackson, NH is a postcard pretty village. Check out the Inn at Thorn Hill or Inn at Jackson or The Wentworth. THere is outlet shopping in nearby North conway, lots of cross coutnry skiing, sled rides, etc

Another great inn is in the same area is the Notchland inn--so pretty and quiet and amazing food!

Other options are Mystic, CT or the Berkshires, MA

  • I am about that far N. from NYC too!!  Kingston.

  • Boston, Berkshires (MA), Newport (RI).

Maybe even a weekend in NYC? See a show? Go to dinner?

Small world, we live near New Paltz!

Thanks for all of your suggestions, everyone! We were actually in Lake Placid a few weeks ago, and we go to Newport fairly often because my cousin lives there. We've also been to Mystic (my family is from southeast RI, and we go back to visit fairly often). The Jackson, NH rec is a great one, I was actually looking at a deal (Groupon or Living Social) last week for the Inn at Thorn Hill, and it looked amazing! Unfortunately, it's about a 6 hour drive from here, which is probably too far for a weekend.

Anyway, thanks again! I'll definitely be looking into your suggestions!

  • I've heard good things about the Mohonk Mountain House. Rhinebeck is cute, but not a lot going on there, lots of cute shops and great restaurants though.

You can also head out to the Finger Lakes and do a winery weekend. Or Cooperstown (the Otesaga is gorgeous). Or Saratoga Springs, awesome during track season (in July) and lots of cute places to stay. Or Lake George (the Sagamore). Skaneateles (Mirbeau).

Okay I just realized you said in February. Do you guys ski? Hunter is down that way as is Bellaire Mountain.

Not sure where you stay in Vermont, but Manchester is adorable and the Equinox is a great hotel. There is skiing (both XC and downhill) and lots of shopping right there.
