Anniversary in Rome - What 4-5* Hotel?

Rome is the last stop on our Italy trip.  I'm really excited about the places I've booked in Tuscany and Positano, but I'm not finding anything that really sticks out as "special" for Rome - either it looks really plain, has a less desirable location, gets lukewarm reviews or is way out of our price range.

Has anyone stayed at a nice, 4-5 star hotel in Rome that isn't $500+ a night? Looking for a location that's near the city center, has a little bit of luxury since we'll be there for our anniversary and is $400/night or less.  That knocks out the Westin Excelsior, the St. Regis.

I love the look of the Rome Cavalieri, but it's way out of the way.

Anything?

Re: Anniversary in Rome - What 4-5* Hotel?

  • I love the Rose Garden Palace Hotel.

  • We stayed at the Albergo del senato, I think was a 4 star. It's right next to the pantheon. The location was great because we could walk to everything? Ithe hotel had a roof top deck, great service and nice rooms.

My friend just stayed at the  Del la ville and loved it.  Not sure if it's under $500

  • Have you looked at apartments on www.vrbo.com or www.homeaway.com???
  • We've stayed at the Hotel Eden and the Inn at the Roman Forum and really liked them both (though they're very different -- the Eden is huge and very old glam, and the Inn at the Roman is modern and boutiquey).
  • We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Cavalieri last summer and loved it.  They have a free shuttle that takes you to and from the city center.  I can't remember if the shuttle runs every 30 mins or once per hour, but it was often enough that it was always available when we needed it and was not a long trip into Rome.

  • We stayed at Exedra Boscolo.  The room and hotel were totally gorgeous and it is within walking distance of the train station.
  • Hotel Gregoriana

very close to the Spanish Steps.

  • I love love love this hotel!!!

It is on the Quirinale, across from the Presidential Palace and up the hill from the Trevi Fountain.  The breakfast is wonderful, the staff is terrific and the bathrooms are to die for.  It only has 12 rooms and it feels like you are staying in a private house with excellent servants.  The honor bar in the salon downstairs is such a lovely way to unwind at the end of the day.

You might want to join Small Luxury Hotels of the World.  That is how I found this hotel and they sometimes have cheaper rates.

  • We are staying at Exedra Boscolo....cannot WAIT!
  • This is my third shot (hateyouNest!!!), but I really love this hotel so I am going to type this again.

You need to stay at the Villa Spaletti Trivelli.  It is on the Quirinale, across from the Presidential Palace and uphill from the Trevi Fountain.  It is small, romantic and beautiful.  The staff is terrific, the rooms are great with wonderful, well-appointed bathrooms and the breakfast is amazing!  The honor bar in the downstairs salon every night is a great way to unwind.

I stayed there last May with my mother and would KILL to go back with my partner.  Tres Romantic!

  • We stayed at the Westin.  Do you have any SPG points?  As I recall, we did a points+$ combo and it wasn't that outrageous.  We had an amazing room with a terrace that was nearly as large as the room...it was fantastic and worth the splurge.

    So Tasty, So Yummy
  • We just stayed at the Rome Cavalieri this past weekend (Thur-Sat).  I've stayed in a boatload of Roman hotels (I travel up, close to every 8wks for work) and I think it's my favorite.  Beautiful, beautiful grounds-- so tranquil.

Fair warning, if you want city center, it's not for you.  City Center, I'd go with Eden or Majestic. I loath the Rose Garden (screwed me on a conference).

  • yes it is out of the way (but to me this was actually a good thing) but the rome cavalieri was amazing
  • Ok, I have a running list going on Kayak!  Villa Spalletti is $563 a night, so unless I find a great deal somewhere it's out. The Eden also looks like it's going to put me over budget.  No SPG points so no Westin.  The rest that you've mentioned may all work.

For the three nesties who stayed at the Cavalieri, can you tell me more about the location?  Should it be a deterrent?  I'm kind of thinking it has to be - we only have three nights in Rome and it looks like the shuttles only run until 8pm or 8:30pm each night.  Assuming we have dinner out each night (which we will,) we're looking at cabbing it back and I'm guessing that would be pricey.  If we had more time to enjoy the grounds, I would be all over it.

Based on pricing and your recs here, it looks like my top four hotels (all 5*) would be the Cavalieri at $280/night, Majestic at $295, Exedra Boscolo is $319 and the Inn at the Roman Forum is $328.

    Decisions, decisions.  ;)

  • Last Thurs, H and I  cabbed to dinner in Trastevere from the Cavalieri and it was 11 euro.

This past Friday, we cabbed to the Vatican (Scavi -- so Alexender VI gate) and it was 8 euro.  After the Vatican, we walked to Navona and had lunch (it's a decent walk-- maybe 20mins, but hardly a huge deal).  From the Pantheon (close to Navona) back to the hotel was 14 euro.

We never actually took the shuttle (it was running), it just didn't fit our time-line.

The Majestic is definitely closer in to the main sights (Trevi, Spanish Steps, etc) and it's only 5mins (if that) walk to the metro.  With a boatload of nearby shops/restaurants.  I generally stay at the Majestic or a nearby hotel for work.

I'm not familiar w/ Exedra Boscolo or the Inn at the Forum.  I would say the Forum is a ways out from most of the city center stuff (although there's a metro).  So, in my mind, I'd either opt out of the central city (Waldorf) or in (Eden) and not mess w/ the Forum, which is kind of the best of neither world, IMO.

All and all, cabs really aren't that expensive (and I should add Cavalieri has a cab stand directly in front, so there's virtually no wait).

  • We stayed at the Al Viminale, and it felt pretty luxurious for the price (which was cheap! At least it was when we were there).  Our room had a beautiful chandelier, and the bathroom was very modern (mood lights in the shower, tv in the mirror, etc.)  http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d623011-Reviews-Al_Viminale_Street_Deluxe_Inn-Rome_Lazio.html

  • Hotel Art by the Spanish Steps, great location for this 4 star.  The rooms and especially the bathroom are in the small side but the accommodations are very nice. Great breakfast if choose that route.  The location is stellar and it's on a tiny quiet street.
  • we were going to stay here but decided to rent an apartment. i loved the trastevere neighborhood. i highly recommend dinner at spirito di vino in that neighborhood. one of our best meals in italy and definitely our best in rome.

  • H and I talked and looked over all the websites tonight and we booked the Cavalieri - a room with a Rome view!  We decided that taking a cab home wasn't a big deal and we love the idea of having some extra space, a beautiful, romantic room, and a gorgeous view of Rome from outside the city!

Thanks for all the suggestions!  I drooled over the websites for hours...esp Villa Spalletti - I love a tiny, boutique hotel!

Now I just need to figure out what we're doing in Venice and Florence!

  • I think you'll be happy with your choice.  As a PP said, it is not that expensive to take a cab back in the evening.  We really enjoyed having a nice quiet place to go to relax at night after being in the busy city all day, and yes the view of the city is stunning!
