We are officially going to have a homebirth. We made our first payment to our midwife (whom we LOVE) today. I'm head over heels excited!!!

Re: AW: homebirth official
Awesome
Very cool!
Can I ask a related question. Is this a difficult thing to do or does it depend on where you live. I have a friend, well, more a "friend", who had a home birth and loved it but goes on and on (and on, and on...) about what a trail she had to blaze to do it and it was such an uphill battle, etc.
Meanwhile, I kind of always though it was an option with (some) midwives.
Is she dramatic, or does it really vary how easy it is.
FWIW - I think it's awesome she got the birth she wanted, for anyone to get that. It's just her relentless insistence that she gets 'credit' for it (for everything, really) is what bugs me.

In Des Moines, if you want to have a homebirth it's very easy to do. We have four midwives who perform homebirths and each take around 10 births a month (that's their limit). I know that's it's very difficult in other parts of the United States, though. Where is your friend from? If she's from New York I can't imagine it would be hard.
So, yeah, I didn't have to blaze any trails. :-)

Yea, she's from the next town over from me. She tends toward drama - so I'm guessing that's the case.
I will say though I was surprised that my big NYC hospital where I gave birth doesn't permit doulas. I thought NYC would be a little more progressive than that.
If you watch The Business of Being Born, I think Ricki Lake and most of the other women featured were in NYC so it can't be that hard.
Good luck Jennrs!! I think that is great.
Will you get a tub/pool? If I were doing a homebirth, I would really like to try a waterbirth or at least laboring in the tub. All of the women in the videos look so peaceful when they have a tub birth.
We are getting a tub! My co-worker rents them out so she's giving us an awesome deal. We'll get it when I'm 37 weeks so we can take advantage of it before baby comes. I've always dreamed of having a water birth.

I am so excited for you! And cannot wait to hear how it goes. something I think I would be open to... but always have that what if in the back of my head. Argh! I love watching the baby stories or baby's first day on TLC and one of the most recent ones was a home water birth and it just looked fantastic. It was actually good timing since she was able to have the baby while her son was at school
If you don't mind me asking, does your insurance cover it? If not how much is it (and comparison to hospital birth).

Nope insurance does not cover it. :-( I do know lots of women who have had insurance cover it though. Our particular coverage does not reimburse any percentage of out-of-network so that's why we aren't covered.
The total cost for all of the prenatal care and the birth is going to be $4500. Our hospital birth (med free) cost $13,000. Crazy, huh?
