Rick Steves Italy 2012...

I know this book is highly recommended on here. I would like to get this year's version (2012 one) so I can research and determine where we want to stay, eat, etc. for our vacation next year.

Does Rick Steves come out with an Italy book every year? Should I wait until the 2013 book comes out- if so, does it usually come out at the end of 2012?

Or, should I just go ahead and purchase it now? And, potentially purchase the 2013 edition if we end up going next year?

Re: Rick Steves Italy 2012...

  • why not go and borrow it from your library, look through it and then if you end up booking buy the new one next year.

  • We had the 2010 version for the trip we took in fall 2011, and there were some times when it would have been nice to have the more updated version.  On the other hand, we started reading the book a year before we went, trying to figure out where we wanted to go and how much time we wanted to spend in each place, so I needed the guidebook that early; a few weeks with the book from the library wouldn't have cut it.

I don't have a solution.  We're thinking about going to Ireland in a couple years, and I want to get the guidebook to start getting excited, but I don't want to have an outdated guidebook when we go, and I don't really want to buy two books.

  • Yes, it's updated every year.  A lot of the material stays the same though.  When are you going?  If you're going in 2013, I'm sure the 2012 book would probably be fine.

We saw lots of people carrying around circa 2007, 08, etc. Rick Steves books when we were there, and also in Ireland.

  • Im sure a ton won't change between now and then. He also puts updates to the books on his wesite : ricksteves.com
