What to do in Germany?

I've got a friend going to Germany in March and he's trying to figure out what to do while there. His plans are to visit Berlin, Munich, Leipzig, and Salzburg. He says there may be other places, but those are the main places he wants to hit. He'll be there two weeks.
Any suggestions?

Thanks ladies! Smile

Re: What to do in Germany?

  • While he's in Munich he should do daytrips to Dauchau and Fussen.

Salzburg is one of my favorite places in the world.  There's a lot to see/do including the cathedral w/catacombs, the palace, the fortress, Mozart's home.  I love wandering around the Old Town and walking along the river.  If he likes beer, he should check out the Augustiner Monastery.  I've also done a salt mines tour while in Salzburg, but he could probably also arrange that from Munich.

  • I haven't been yet, but my H and I are going in March/April so here are a few things we have planned.

A day trip to Neuschwanstein to tour the castles, a day trip to Salzburg, and my H is looking forward to tasting a lot of beer in Munich. :)  I'd also like to visit Hallstatt to see the town and tour the salt mine if we have time.

We're stopping in Bamberg for 2 nights on our way from Munich to Berlin.  We don't have much planned other than to wander around the city.  I enjoy smaller towns and wanted to visit an area that wasn't destroyed in the war.

For Berlin, we mostly plan on sightseeing and visiting a couple of museums since this is our first trip there.  We might go to Potsdam also.  One thing to note is that the Reichstag now requires booking at least 3 days in advance if you'd like to take a tour even if just visiting the dome.  I've read several reviews on TripAdvisor where people didn't know this and were disappointed, so I thought I'd mention it.

  • When I was in Berlin the best thing I did was a walking tour from Berlin Walks.  I did that my first day (it took a good chunk of the morning) and it gave a great overview of the history of Berlin and gave me a good feel for what I wanted to see/do during the rest of my time in Berlin.

  • We went to Munich in October and did day trips to Fussen and Zugspitze.  Zugspitze was amazing so I'd highly recommend it.  Salzburg is wonderful too (especially if you get outside of town into the lakes district).

  • When I went to Berlin for the day on a work trip to Germany, we got day passes on the subway/tram. They also rent bikes at the train station if you prefer to travel around the city that way. Most cities in Germany have bike rentals at the train stations.

We did the usual sites: Brandenburg, Checkpoint Charlie, the wall.

Another interesting place to vist that you may be near is Nuerenburg.  I was not that thrilled with Munich. We spent a day there then decided to spend the next day at Nuerenburg.Wonderful medieval town square, castle, medieval dungeons.

Saltzburg is great. PP mentioned things to do there. Must see the castle.
