Cleaning door hinge grease from baseboards and floor

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Our baseboards have a flat portion on their tops that unfortunately has collected door hinge grease in various corners around our house.  Cleaning this is incredibly difficult and I've been reduced to using Q-tips dipping in cleaner, which requires tremendous elbow grease (no pun intended) and is only partially effective.

We have the same problem with the grout of our tile floor at the base of our bathroom doors, although that is a little less difficult to get at since it is flat on the floor.  Nevertheless, I can't find anything that cleans it effectively.

Suggestions?

  • maybe soap and a toothbrush?

but i suppose that's almost the same as a q-tip.....

  • Hmm...I've never had this particular problem, but my go-to tools are Magic Erasers and a scrub brush (although PP's suggestion of a toothbrush might be a better size for the job).

I'm afraid that anything that would be a really good de-greaser would damage the paint.  What are you using to clean it now?

This gets to the heart of the problem.  Smile

I have used a bit of bleach, which helped, but if I wasn't precise, it also started taking the paint off the wall.  The toothbrush is a good idea and probably far more effective than a Q-tip, so I will try that.

FWIW, I used the Magic Eraser on the tile floor and really scrubbed, and it did make a difference in certain areas, although not all.  My H isn't a huge fan of using it on any painted surface because it's basically a very fine sandpaper and can tarnish the paint with enough scrubbing.

  • lurking.....try goo gone with your q tip or tooth brush to get rid of the grease
