Sorry this is long! And it's probably too detailed, but oh well.
It was hard to fall asleep the night before the race, I was so nervous! Once I did fall asleep, I had a dream that I started the race but had a bathroom emergency and couldn't finish the race. That just made me more nervous when I woke up in the morning. I hadn't gone to the bathroom since the morning before (TMI, I know.) So we wake up at 6am (why do they make winter races start so early?? It would've been nice to at least sleep until 7 or 8) and ate some toast and part of a banana. My MIL and I (she ran the Half Marathon, too) got to the race location by 7. It was SO cold. It was probably around 40? and it was super windy. Luckily, they had some portable heaters close to the start line. We just stayed close to the heaters until right before the race started.
The race started off really well. Once we got running it didn't feel so cold. MIL and I ran the first couple miles together. But I think I was pushing myself too hard, so I had to take a short walk break and MIL went ahead of me (she's faster than I am, so I knew that would eventually happen.) I printed off a pace bracelet that showed how long it should take me to get to each mile marker if I wanted to meet my goal of 2 hours and 30 minutes. I was doing great for the first 9 miles. I was even 2 minutes ahead of schedule every mile! But I guess I was starting to get tired because after mile 9 I got a minute behind and then I just gave up trying to reach that goal. But I kept trying to do my best so I could meet my second goal of 2 hours and 40 minutes. The last mile was HORRIBLE. The super cold wind was blowing right in my face. And the last .1 miles was UPHILL. Who ends a race going uphill??
Anyways, the race was pretty fun and the weather wasn't too bad except for the stupid wind. I finished under my second goal. My gun time was 2 hrs 38 min and 40 sec. I'm not sure why, but they haven't posted the chip times yet. But we crossed the start line only about 15-20 seconds after the guntime, so it's probably still in the 2 hours 38 minutes range. And best of all, no digestive issues!! That was what I was most worried about. Now, my legs are SO sore. We went shopping yesterday afternoon after the race and I felt like my legs were going to fall off.
Re: Half Marathon Recap
I'm also quite impressed! You've got my time beat.
Hows your foot doing?
Making plans for the next race yet?
Thanks everyone!
My foot is SO sore! It started hurting around mile 2. I think I may go see the sports medicine doc I used to go to church with and see what he thinks.
I haven't decided on races yet. Before the half, I was feeling pretty confident and thought I may want to do the OKC Memorial full marathon, but after the race I thought "geez, I couldn't imagine only being halfway done right now!" Plus I don't want to commit that much time to training. I think I'll stick to working on better times for 5ks and 10ks. Maybe do another half sometime soon, haven't decided yet.
