When would you go to Orlando for Theme Parks, May or October?

Hi everyone,

I am looking into going to Orlando to go to the theme parks with my H.  Right now the middle of May or October are looking like our only options.  Airfare is not really a concern since I have passes from my aunt who is a flight attendant so our flight will be reasonable.  I am wondering more along the lines of how crowded the parks will be.  My H doesn't really like crowds, and I don't really want to go if it's going to be really crowded so that I can't enjoy it.

Also, any hotel recs or any other information is appreciated.  Thanks!

Re: When would you go to Orlando for Theme Parks, May or October?

  • October for the Food and Wine Festival at Epcot!!

eta: We were there marathon weekend, and our longest wait was probably 30 minutes for the big rides - fast pass as much as you can

  • DH and I were just saying how if I had a different job (I'm a teacher, so I can't really take that time off) we would love to go in early May.  October would be lovely too though....really I don't think you could go wrong either way.

  • october!!!

    not may, ever.

  • I went in early October two years ago and the weather was lovely and there were no super long lines like when I had gone in late December the year before.

And the Food & Wine Festival is great!

  • October, the weather will be beautiful and you won't have to deal with all the kids out of school and in the parks.
  • I definitely agree to going in October...The kids will be back in school and less crowds..I have never gone during this time but have been in the summer around July, December and also in March during spring break and it is super crazy then. I definitely recommend you going to the parks early in the morning which when they first open it is not that bad...Summer is super humid and the weather in March is 80 ish...I have not gone in October but I am sure it is still nice..Hope you guys enjoy yourselves...:)

This.  May will be hot and the crowds will be worse.  Love the food and wine festival too :)

  • I have been in Orlando at both times and can say hands down that October was the better experience. While October is hot and you might want to go for a swim mid-day, May is uncomfortably hot and humid. We also saw significantly larger crowds in May, which made the heat all the more frustrating. I also think there might be greater odds of kids being out of school in May.

  • We went in late September, early October a year and a half ago.  It was perfect...no crowds and lovely weather (it was still pretty warm.)

  • We went in both May for memorial day weekend and at the end of October for 5 days last year.

Crowds were not bad either trips and about the same. (which was shocking).

May was HOT. October's weather was perfect, and Epcot has the Food and Wine Festival and for those two reasons, I would say October. Enjoy!

  • October -

    • Pros: kids in school so fewer people in the park, nice weather usually, festivals
    • Con: It is still hurricane season

    May -

    • Pros: Not hurricane season
    • Cons: may be more crowded as some schools get out in early May, starts to get hot. I always turned my AC on by may in central FL when I lived there.

For both of these months Disney runs specials for Florida residents since the parks are not as crowded then.

  • Thank you so much for all the input!  I was leaning towards October since it would give us more time to save, but I was iffy about it since it means that we have to push back TTC a few months.  I am okay with that though :)

  • Ditto the Food & Wine Festival in October at EPCOT. Keep in mind though that October can still be insanely hot. The last time we went in October it was still in the 90s everyday.
  • Definitely October! It's usually in the 90's in May and October can range anywhere from the 80's to even the 70's or 60's so much more temperate for walking around the theme parks. Plus you'll get to experience the food and wine festival at Epcot! School will be in session, so it won't be overly crowded whereas in May you take the chance of it being more crowded with schools that are starting to let out for the summer.
