GREAT UPDATE ABOUT MAC!!!
Friday he acted normal all day and ate as soon as he got home. He got a bit sluggish later, but we gave him some extra fluids and he seemed to be a bit better. He was fine Saturday, but yesterday he seemed to be kind of slow again. I gave him his fluids and hoped things would improve today and went to bed. A little while later, DH came in and said that Mac had just thrown up "steel wool." I panicked and looked at what he was holding. It, thank God, wasn't steel wool--it was sparkly pom-pom balls. Mac likes to play with them, and the big ones are far too large for him to swallow, but he does have a couple of medium ones (or, at least, he did). They always get knocked under the couch, but about the time he started acting sick, we had a guest and pulled out the sofa bed, and he found the poms and was playing with them very briefly. We thought they just went back under the couch, but he apparently thought they were a delicious treat.
This morning he greeted me at their door (something he hasn't done since he got sick) and immediately started slurping down breakfast. He's acting completely normal and healthy. I will keep giving him his subQ, but it looks like the root of the problem was this obstruction. I've also removed any toy that looks like it would be delicious and small enough for consumption. I didn't know the poms were small enough for him to eat. Cats are dumb.
When I came home from work he greeted me at the door and started chewing on the bag of cat food I brought home from PetSmart. Now we're hanging out on the balcony (70 degrees in January is crazy) and he's sniffing around for birds. I'm absolutely thrilled that he seems to have made a full recovery.
