Hi all!
How are we? Ups? Downs?
QOTW: What will you / did you do when your LO out grows their infant car seat, will you keep them rear facing or switch to forward? Is this decision the "norm" where you live?

Re: Mums Bumps and BBTs
Hi! All's going well here in the mouse house.
Ups: DD is getting better at sitting but still hasn't got it down 100%. She's making all sorts of interesting noises now and she's getting better at eating, she's taken to BLW like a fish in water. DH loves watching her eat and my dad has now (I hope) gotten over the fear that she's going to choke and went home from his last dinner hear to talk about nothing but her eating, too cute
Downs: DD's still not back to where she was with sleep before christmas, man I miss her sleeping "well".
QOTW: I've finally convinced DH to keep E rear facing after she's out of the infant seat. I've been looking into it and to me it's a no brainer but DH wanted her to face forward for better communication...ok. Here most people switch to front facing at one year, I haven't seen even one RF car seat in the shops that isn't an infant seat.
Everyone is good here, trying to decide where to send ds next year for school for pre-k, way more intense of a decision than I ever thought it would be! DD is the happiest baby ever, I don't know how we got so lucky.
The new recommendation in the US is to keep babies RF'ing for 2 years. The law is 1 year AND 20 lbs for rf'ing. We kept ds rf'ing until almost 2 (22 months) and will keep dd rf'ing until at least 2.
Edit: You should show your dh some videos of what happens in an accident when a baby is ff'ing. They don't have the spinal development to withstand an accident if they are.
Cecilia arrived 12 October 2012
ups: G is so independent and is growing up so fast. She enjoys life, which is fun to see. She is growing daily and has recently learned how to unlock our iPhones and can also climb up onto the sofa. Watch out world!
down: She is continually challenging me - throwing food, refusing to eat, running away from me on walks. Being a mom is hard!
We were borrowing an infant car seat. When we went back to the US last, we bought a toddler car seat. I feel like the US car seats are a bit safer, and it was cheaper to buy there. It can be used rear facing or forward facing. When we are in the US we use it rear facing. When we are in the UK we use it forward facing, although we don't have a car and will use it probably once a month (or even less frequently).
Good luck Sushi! I have everything crossed for you!
Ups: Baby girl did not scream the whole time she got a bath today! She's sleeping well, eating well, and has been doing well all around now. I can't believe how fast time is flying!
Downs: Time is flying! She's growing so fast and already a month old! I'm happy to see her grow and develop, but want to keep her small too!
QOTD: We don't have a car so no carseat here.
Fingers crossed for you guys! I'll be thinking of you!
How are we? Ups? Downs? Much better.. my back hasn't been bothering me as much since I started doing some exercises for it.. and walking every day helps too! I did also get the pregnancy support belt and it feels so good!
QOTW: What will you / did you do when your LO out grows their infant car seat, will you keep them rear facing or switch to forward? Is this decision the "norm" where you live? Forward facing, I'm thinking that baby will be about a year around that time anyway.

My Blog
You know they are supposed to stay rear facing til 2 in the US right?
Downs: DH and our beloved Boston Terrier, Smudge, were jumped by a neighbor's two unleashed Boxers last week. The dogs are a known nuisance and, frankly, it was just a matter of time before somebody got bitten. Unfortunately, it was my DH and dog. . Most infuriating was the response of the owners. After the dogs had been pulled off of our dog, DH stated (more likely yelled) "Your effing dogs bit me, your effing dogs bit me!". The wife threw a quick "sorry" over her shoulder as she took her dogs home, that was it. The husband, upon being told by the Animal Control Officer that that the dogs would have to be quarantined, was upset that the quarantine might interfere with their upcoming vacation plans. Nevermind that his uncontrolled dogs bit a neighbor and their dog. nice people, huh? I've talked with them before. They seemed like nice people. My impression has changed considerably--for the worse.
Ups: DH and Smudge are fine. They both went to the emergency room the night it happened and their respective injuries were minor, especially considering what they could have been. DH had several puncture wounds on his hand and Smudge had a cut on the inside of his lower eyelid. Smudge went back yesterday for a recheck and he is healing nicely. (He also got his 15 digit microchip and then his rabies vax, so he is now ready for Germany!) We are also extremely thankful that LO was not outside with DH when the dogs jumped Smudge. (We don't have a backyard, so we walk Smudge multiple times a day to potty and for exercise.). Things could have much worse.
QOTD: I switched LO out of his bucket into a rear facing convertible car seat when he was about five months old. Our cars, both, had clamshell doors, and lifting the bucket up and in was hard on my body. We kept him rear facing until he was 25 months old. At 30 months old, he is forward facing in his convertible car seat. We are in the States. So, according to US standards, we exceeded the law and met the new recommendation. But, according to the Bump standards and some European standards, we turned him a little early.
Ups: V is happy, healthy, chattering, running and loving life. Started saying 'up' and some sort of version of thank you (tee-too basically)...my main goal in life is to teach her to say 'PLEASE' instead of 'eeehhh eeeh ughhhhhh ughh'.
Downs: She was sick for 8 days, didn't eat ANY food for 7 of those and for a day and a half I was actually terrified that something was actually seriously wrong but I felt so helpless to communicate that to health care staff. Now, I suspect because of the illness, her sleep is 'off'...waking up upset instead of happy, waking and needing soothing 1 or 2 times a night...I'm not used to it anymroe and I'm tired.
QOTD: V is 14.5 months. She is in a convertible rear-facing seat and will be for some time...she isn't quite 20lbs yet anyway, and the evidence/logic of the safety of keeping her rear facing longer is too strong for me to debate even though having her forward facing seems 'easier.' Mostly though I'm just dreading the car in general on our TWO effing 14 hour (each way) trips from my home to DH's this summer. Night. Mare.
My Blog
Ups: We just celebrated T's second birthday with all her little friends and my sister flew out to surprise her which was awesome. T is doing well- happy and healthy and loving life. Her spoken language is finally coming along so it's nice to hear her talking more- She's catching up, I hope!
Downs: T is the worst sleeper ever. EVER.
QOTW: We were rear facing until she turned two and just recently turned her forward.
Ups: N is pulling herself to stand and can stand against things very well now, even to the point of hanging on and bending down to pick something up (like the prized remote control!). Still only 2 teeth but she's loving her food though sometimes dh comes out with a ridiculous comment about maybe we shouldn't be giving her such lumpy food cos she might be getting a sore tummy (no, I don't think she has a sore tummy - she just wants attention and you to talk with her which is why she shouts at you...).
Downs: I'm working too much the last couple of weeks. 11hrs yesterday and Monday, 6hrs and an afternoon hospital appt today, 10hrs tomorrow... But Friday I'm finishing early - have to go interview new childminders.
QOTD: N has moved out of her infant seat in the last month at 10 months. I did a lot of research on what was available her for the next size up. RF seats basically would not fit in our car so we ended up with a forward facing one. Even the combi RF/FF wouldn't have fit in the car with a passenger in the front seat. Compared to the norm, we kept her RF longer than a lot of people do here...
Ups: Generally, we're pretty well. William is sleeping like a champ, now we're limiting his afternoon nap to an hour. I love seeing how they grow and develop, and it's just (mostly) a joy.
Downs: Matilda has had 5 mouth ulcers in a week. The doctor thinks it's just because she's had a few bugs nad is run down, but it could be thrush or worse. She's not sleeping or eating great. Also, we cant' find walking shoes to fit Matilda, she's so small! It's suprisingly frustrating, given that sh'es really wanting to walk everywhere now, and has outgrown her cruisers. We're stuck waiting for new lines to see what they have in her size, and order things in.
QOTW: Both of ours are only RF for about a year. Like Irish said, it's very difficult to get a RF seat from 12 months/9kg. With W, it wasn't going to fit in our little Corsa, and would've cot ?300+ I think. With M, we'r ejust using W's. M is still rear-facing at 13 months, but we're swapping her over this weekend as she's finally outgrowing it.
Ups: DD is able to do sooo many things now. I can?t believe how much she?s grown. My baby isn?t a baby anymore. Sniff, Sniff. Yesterday she walked to the car in the snow all by herself instead of my carrying her. Sure it took a bit longer, but she was so proud of herself for doing it. Hill and all.
QOTW: DD is in a RF seat that goes up to 18 kilos or about 4 years. I suspect that if we get much past 3 years, we?ll be doing well. For me it was a no-brainer. I tried out a couple seats first and measured how much space they needed so that we could be sure that the new family car would fit her in one in the back and me in the passenger in front comfortably. It does, and I?m very happy. DD actually can see a whole lot more than if she were FF because she sits up high enough to look over the back seats and have the whole rear window and side window to look out. If she were FF she?d just be staring at my very tall headrest and whatever she could see out the side. So far she doesn?t mine being RF and we have a mirror so I can see what she?s doing if need be.
Mouse, if you PM your e-mail I can e-mail you the Stiftungwarentest with the RF carseats available and Germany and a list of places you can buy them on the internet.
Sushi- that is encouraging news. Thinking of you!
Ups: R is more alert and attentive daily. He loves his play mat now, and adores some of the toys. His gas problems seem to be improving too, which is a blessing!
Downs: He is still not sleeping at night anywhere but with me. The midwife suggested like a month ago that we put him in bed with us. But, our bed is an American pillow-top bed, and it freaks me out to have him in there- he has rolled into me on a few occasions, and I can't take it. So, R and I are downstairs on the much harder guest bed, and DH is upstairs every night. I don't know how on eart I'm ever going to get that kid into his own bed!
QOTW: Well, R is only 2 months old, so we don't have to worry about l?fe outside of the infant seat for a while. But, I would love a rear facing seat. I will probably send you a PM, Ms. Glitterfart, I would be interested in the info as well for the future!
**lurking**
Sushi, good luck!!!! Fingers and toes and arms and legs crossed!
Good luck sushisamba!
Ups: DS is doing great. We also had a 12 week scan for the bump on Monday which went well (due date moved up 2 days til Aug 1). It was funny because for that scan they ask you to drink 4-5 glasses of water beforehand so your bladder is full so they can see the baby. My scan ended up being 30 mins late so I was bursting for the loo when I went in. The sonographer said 'Actually your bladder only has to be half full so you can let a bit out after I get the first measurement' and I was like 'Oh that would be great'. My poor DH looked a bit shocked and said to me 'Should I put some tissues down or something?' and then me and the sonographer were laughing before we explained I would be allowed to go to the bathroom to do this!
Downs: DS has been crying the last few days when I leave for work which is new and sometimes I get a little paranoid like 'what has the nanny done to him that makes him cry when I leave?'!
QOTD: DS moved into a forward facing car seat at 1 year. I haven't seen rear-facing car seats for stage 1 (I think the bucket type is stage 0) here in the UK. Everyone I know also has forward-facing for their kids 1+ years old.
Hi Ladies.
Ups: A is growing and learning so fast. I really think she's clever, combined with her stubborness we'll see where that gets us.
Sleep is still an up and down. I had one good night, the last two have been hard.
Confession- I cut Alexandra's hair - her first hair cut. I did it after DH went to Europe for a business trip, and he didn't get the picture I emailed so he hasn't seen it. My au pair thought it was worse than I did, so we went to the hair stylist last night and got it cleaned up a bit, but it is too short in the front (my fault). DH comes back tonight.
QOTW: I want to keep A rear facing as long as possible, until at least 2. I have a Britax convertible seat that works well. I bought a new seat for my car (Diono R100), and it doesn't work rear facing, it's just too big and I can't get it secure enough. Front facing it's ok, and much narrower than the Britax, so I need to figure out what to do for a 2nd seat and whether or not to return it. I wanted a taller seat as A is tall for my car, and not as wide, but maybe I should just stick with a Britax.
No... sigh, why do things have to be so different between the US and Canada.. I don't get it!
I did just check though and it says that they "suggest" so they can't make you but it is a suggestion.

1 year AND 20 lbs is the law, 2 years is a recommendation but I can't understand why you wouldn't. It is infinitely safer.
