Best time to book flights?
Hi all, I don't post here too often but had a question. When would you recommend booking plane tickets when traveling with kids? Right now I found non-stop flights to FL at $300/each which I suppose isn't horrible and at reasonable times. I'm not sure if waiting would be beneficial or not given our slight lack of flexibility having the kids along (no red-eyes, etc). One stop layovers are actually not any less expensive, surprisingly.
Would you book these now or try to wait and see if they get cheaper? The trip is the 3rd week of May, going from WI to Orlando. TIA!
Re: Best time to book flights?
I have found that there are some fairly good deals when booking Tuesday evenings. This was a tip I received from a former co-worker.
I usually sign up for fare alerts from online travel sites. The site will continually monitor your specific flight or the flights that meet your predetermined criteria and send email updates on the fare.
I tend to keep the alerts valid even after I book the flight. It makes me feel better about the fare I paid if it the price goes up!
GL!
I was also going to say six weeks out... but I don't think it always works out that way. I also heard that a lot of airlines won't start "managing" their flight costs until 2-3 months in advance, so you may get a better rate later down the road. I would keep an eye on rates, and sign up for some free services like yapta that will e-mail you when the rates go down. Keep an eye out and jump on it when you see rates go down (and hopefully not up). Also, starting at Tuesday at 3pm until Wednesday the rates are rumored to be the best for US travel.
What about booking through Orbitz? They have the price guarantee that if someone else books the same flight they'll reimburse you the difference. I've never used it before, so not sure how it works, but that would give you peace of mind of having everything booked.
Gas prices have jumped up over $0.25/gal around here within a matter of days, so I wouldn't be surprised if that increase is reflected in flight prices soon, if not already.
