Re: GP??
taking your body-basal-temperature every morning, first thing. your body temperature trends (along with other signs) gives you clues on when you're ovulating/fertile..

jumped ship to the new and improved nest. back to TB for baby boards.
"GP" = Getting Pregnant.
"temping" = as jennlin described. Usually used as part of the Fertility Awareness Method of con(tra)ception. The of-referenced "bible" of this method is Taking Control of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler; her website is here.
Ok, well.....I could be wrong (seeing as how apparently me being super fertile and H having super sperm I never worried about it...) but wouldn't you just try for a bit first and then if you're having delays gp would you then start temping? Why would you temp first?? Just curious
i want to know what is going on with my body. learning the ins and outs of temping.. or atleast reading a bunch of stuff and taking tests via ff was important. having a baby is more than just having sex once and gtkfu. i'm not sure many people know the process.. i like to learn stuff first. i started temping first, in oct 2010, because i had been on some sort of bc for about 10 years. i was worried that i wouldn't ovulate. i just wanted to know for sure.
now, i just like the idea of sort of being totally in control. plus, i don't want to get preg right now. april/may at the earliest would be perfect. obv if we get preg in the next couple months i'll be the happiest girl in the world!
A lot of people temp to AVOID getting pregnant. Also, if you're planning to TTGKTFU in the near future, a lot of people like to figure out their cycle, how everything works, that they are ovulating, etc. And, if you don't know how long it will take and you really want to get PG, temping helps make sure you are putting in the effort when it counts.
this.
DH does not! And I try to explain it to him and he thinks I'm making it up. Like when he wants to try on a given day and I tell him that it's impossible, he does not believe me. Or when he's thinking I could be PG and I explain that we didn't have sex on any days that could've gotten me PG, he doesn't believe me. He insists sex on any given day can = baby. Silly boy.
ROFL, aww, your poor DH. This is one reason why I think sex ed in this country needs to be a LOT better than it is!
Does he at least have a basic understanding of how the menstrual cycle works? Like, "you release ONE egg (typically) per cycle... and if there's no sperm when the egg is there, then the egg will die and you cannot get pregnant until next cycle" level of understanding?
On the note of what DH's do not know, today I had a doctor's appointment to confirm and then called him to tell him that yes, we are 3 weeks, 6 days along.
His response? "Uh......" and you can totally HEAR him trying to figure out the math and when we did the deed almost 4 weeks ago. "I'm confused."
I told him to come home from work and I'd try to explain. I think he's still really confused.
If you want to read a really good book on temping you need to read Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. It'll answer a ton of questions and is super helpful! I temped to avoid for about 1 1/2 years, and it worked well for us.

My Blog
We didn't try first and delayed temping.
I started temping prior to even TTC, though not to avoid. I wanted to understand what was going on better and both D and I are over 30 and have a few friends who are infertile (to the point any kind of IVF would not work). Mostly? I didn't want to 'waste time' (however fun that kind of wasting time would be).
If there were problems, I wanted to know as quickly as possible and start moving both mentally and reality-wise towards adoption (which was our plan if we couldn't get pregnant within a year of starting to try), because even adoption can take a really long time.
