Describe your house.

This post is influenced by NL Foodie.

How would you describe the style of your house? How did you decorate it? If you want, post pics of the coolest thing/room from your house.

We moved in about five years ago and I would love to redocrate but I think I will wait until we move again. We painted our walls this summer. White. Boring, I know.

Re: Describe your house.

  • If it's inspired by me, I'll have a go. We have a rowhouse in the style that in NL they call a drive-in-house.

Ground floor has a garage (which is just our crap/tool/storage room), a toilet, and the huge eat-in kitchen (where the new cabinet went).

Second floor is completely open, and on one(short) side we have our living room, along the longest wall we have bookcases and on the other short side we have a computer area and a little sofa where it's nice to sit and read while someone else is watching tv.

Third floor has the master bed, 2 small bedrooms and the large bathroom with a tub and separate shower and the 2nd toilet (house has 2 toilets, we might install a third at some point).

4th floor is about half the size of the other floors (with a little terrace on both sides) and has a guest room, a sauna, and a shower and sink (this is where we might want to install an additional toilet, to make the top floor bathroom a little more complete.)

Besides the cool wall in the kitchen, all our walls are currently white. I'm thinking of painting one of the walls in the living room a moss/olive/sage green. Most of our furniture is (various shades of) brown.

  • We have a 4 room apartment plus bath and kitchen, totaling about 86 sqm. The main room is the living/dining area, and off of that are our bedroom, DD's bedroom, and our home office. We have a pretty large balcony (just raised a bit since we're on the ground floor) and a little yard that stretches around the side of the house.

Our style is eclectic IKEA/hand-me-down/sale because we're still not entirely certain where we want to end up and therefore don't want to invest a lot of money in the household if we're just going to give it up in a few years. I'm now about 95% certain we're going to end up here, though, so when furniture and other decisions have come up recently, I've tried to push for the longer-term, usually more expensive options. The one thing that does kind of bother me is that we have about 5000 different colors/types of wood going on. When we do make things more permanent, I would really like to stick to one type of wood where possible.

I think when we come back from DH's paternity leave next fall he'll start looking for another job, and then I hope we'll move to buy something whereever we end up. Throwing money out the window on rent is really German, and it can have its advantages, but my American-ness cringes at the thought of how much we could have put towards a mortgage by now.

  • We live in a condo. It's much bigger than we have need for and we haven't decorated beyond putting our furniture in and our paintings on the walls. I hate to paint if we're just going to have to pay to have the walls painted back white in a year and since we don't know how long we'll be here we're not decorating. My favorite part is the kitchen. After little galley kitchens in Geneva and Prague I am loving having a nice by American standards kitchen.

We have a separate kitchen, but it's small (I almost said tiny, but our last one was tiny. This one is like 6sqm instead of 4, so I guess it's just small). I get kitchen envy whenever I'm back in the States, and sometimes here, too.

  • In London we have a tiny two up, two down Victorian end terrace flat. Nothing in it is influenced by us it was completely furnished down to the tea cups and towels.

All our stuff is in our house in Texas. It's an original 1970s ranch. We've been renovating it  - ourselves - since we bought it. I can probably count on my fingers the number of walls that I haven't seen the studs to. It's a *** ton of work (which can suck when you're supposed to be home for Thanksgiving and spend most of your time covered in sheetrock dust from demoing a closet) but the beauty of it is that we can make everything work for how we live.

  • We have what is called a semi-detached house.  That means that another house and ours share a common wall.  We re-did something in every single room in the house (from painting to knocking down walls).  We have three floors - ground floor is a study with a fireplace that I painted a yellow-orange colour, a 1/2 bath and an open-plan kitchen/dining room/living room area that is in two shades of green.  We added the half-bath & opened up the living room/dining area into the kitchen (and got rid of a shower).  On the first floor we have two bedrooms (apple green & yellow) and a bathroom (with the most amazing raining on you shower head). The top floor is a loft conversion that was done before we bought it...I use it for watching t.v., hanging laundry & for guests.  Eventually we'd like to re-do the loft to make it bigger and add a shower/toilet room (it's doable).

Our house is very much like many of the 1930s homes in London...I think they were done by the same company.

  • We rent an 85 m2, 2 bedroom apartment in a 1930's building with 3 other apartments.

Our living room/dining room is pretty large as are the bedrooms, the kitchen is separate and a bit too small for my liking, but compared to some friend's places, it is a good size. I need more storage in the bedrooms and the kitchen.

We have completely decorated it, but that is probably only because H is in the interior design and decoration/furniture industry and he sometimes uses our place as a showroom or to meet clients. Our style is contemporary (lacquer and aluminum cast) with Vietnamese and Cambodian touches (statues, silks, and artwork).

I can't wait to find a new house with garden to be able to have a nice outdoor living space.

  • We have a two up two down 1950s ex-council terraced house. Because it's ex-council, the bedrooms are a decent size, but our back yard is concrete (yuck!). We've not done a lot of work to it because it's only ever mean to be a short-term house. So it needs a new bathroom and the textured wallpaper needs stripping, but we're not tackling that in this house, with two small children.

It's mostly furnisehd from Ikea (not a lot of affordable options up here, unless you go very rag-taggy with second-hand), and we have a living room and eat-in kitchen downstairs (nice and modern), with a front garden (postage stamp size) and a rear yard. Upstairs are two bedrooms and a bathroom.

  • We have a pretty big house, by European standards, 6 bed, 5.5 bath. Right now it is decorated in a style I like to refer to as my son threw up all his toys and left them in every room in our house. It is annoying. It is sort of craftsman style.

  • We live in a modest "garden" apartment. Well who am I kidding we live in a basement! But hey it's really cozy and surprisingly we get a lot of light!

All the rooms have pipes running under the ceiling. It supply's the heat which we can't control so sometimes it can get pretty hot. But we also have really thick baseboards and wood frames around the windows. Plus nice window ledges. All the walls are cream and the baseboards white it's nice and neutral which like.

The first door we unlock has 7 steps that go down into a little entry way. We have a coat rack there and mats for our wet shows. It also has great bike storage. I'm hoping to get a bike for my birthday. Then we unlock the second door which opens to the living room. It's rectangle and isn't too big but big enough for us. We can fit our small dining table on one side which is nice. Next to the living room is the guest bedroom maybe about 10 x10. We keep a daybed in there and my wicker desk. There is also a dresser were DH keeps his clothes.

Then off the living room we have a short hallway. At the end is the small bathroom. To the left is the kitchen It's square and unfortunately doesn't have much counter space. We bought a little Ikea kitchen thing to help with that. We have a kitchen table in there too. My favorite part is the pantry!

Then to the right is out bedroom. Big enough for my queen bed and big mirror dresser.  Off of our bedroom is a modest storage room! Another big plus!

Negatives: We live far from the Loop via the el. So DH commutes almost 2 hours a day. I also don't like the color of my bedroom furniture and plan to re-stain it.

Positive: We don't pay much for the place and we have two bedrooms! Don't pay for heat or water. I love our neighborhood because it's quiet and mostly safe. We are walking distance to bars and restaurants. We are close to an el stop.

  • Like ukyankee, we live in a semi-detached house, though ours is a bungalow!

We have a large living room with a small study/office off this.  Double glass doors lead into the kitchen-dining room, which is really quite big.  We have lots of counter space, a big table and N's playpen and there is still plenty of space and not cramped at all.  Off the kitchen is a utility room for the washing and drying machines.  Off the other side is a little hallway with 2 bedrooms (decent sized compared to what we had in the apartment before) and the bathroom.

The third bedroom is in the converted attic space and the stairs to get to that is no where near the other bedrooms - to get from our room upstairs you go through the little hall, the kitchen, the living room, the entrance hall and then up the stairs... not really practical if we have a second child... But it is a big space - there is a large 5ft bed up there, a sofa, storage and an en suite.  We have a lot of things stored up there - things that N has grown out of like the swing, pram, crib (only up to 6mths), clothes.... The great thing about this room is that you can't hear what is happening in the other bedrooms - a bonus when N was really small and we needed a night off to catch up on sleep - she could have been crying all night and the person upstairs wouldn't know the pain of the person downstairs...

We have a good sized garden in the back that is mainly laid in lawn.  There is a huge trampoline (our landlords...), a shed (really falling down...), table and chairs (seen better days), a play house and a gas bbq (bargain in lidl last year for ?35!!).  We also have off street parking to the front.

All the walls are white and there is cream carpeting around most of the house.  The kitchen floor is tiled but badly laid so the grout is all cracked and we have to watch that N doesn't try to eat it... And it's a cold house!!!

The best thing about the house?  It's proximity to the local park!!!  And shops...

  • We built our house, so it?s pretty much my dream house other than some compromises we had to make about size...as DH pointed out, you don?t just have to have the money to build 200sqm, but you have to have the money to heat them. We have 4B, 2BA, office, LR, Kitchen and laundry.

All the rooms are painted a color, we have white doors trim and windows. All wood, very important to me. we have some doo dads on the windows to make it look like it?s an older villa instead of new construction, and for the most part everyone who has been to visit thought we boght and old house and fixed it up.image This is the only pic online I can find to pip, so it?s different now that the yard has been done.

  • White is a clean look, but I agree that it can be rather boring. If you are looking to sell in the near future, fine wallpaper makes any room look more elegant. Potential buyers respond well to the look!
  • I would describe the style of our place as somewhere between college dorm room and bachelor pad.  The core design piece is the pool table in the middle of my living room.  I have really got to stop letting H pick out things for the house.
