Netflix Streaming vs. Amazon

Anyone used both and greatly prefer Amazon?

Our Netflix has worked for shiit since we "updated" it a few months ago.  I hate the new layout whereyou have to go to "More Episodes" to see the description of the episodes. I could deal with that but half the time, it won't connect to the internet, loads slowly, takes me to a page to "choose my Netflix experience" (regular or just for kids--which would be irritating enough but it then won't let me choose either and I have to go back to the main menu, then pause to "load" multiple times during an episode.

I'm considering cancelling.

Re: Netflix Streaming vs. Amazon

  • I pay for the amazon one, but have never used it since it doesn't stream to any of the 4 devices I typically stream my Netflix to now. Also, from what I can tell a lot of things still cost money to stream in addition to the $80/yr amazon prime cost? I don't get it.

If you really want to give it a try, I would let you use mine for a bit if they don't have a free trial.

  • I don't have any of those issues with ours (except the more episodes thing, and I don't like that).  Could it be an issue with your wi-fi?

We have Amazon Prime already, so I'm interested in trying it.  But it doesn't play well with the ps3 so I haven't looked into it.

  • I'm having the same connection problems...it's like winning the lottery when netflix connects.

But Amazon Prime has a really lousily small collection, so I hate to switch.

If you only watch a little, vudu is worth it.

  • By the way, the interface is device dependent. Maybe another firmware update can fix it or you can stream through something else?
  • Netflix Streaming made me ragey.  It worked for one weekend and then never again.

I just sit and deal with the stupid high cost of cable.  At least I know it will work.

  • We finally hooked our Netflix up to the Wii this weekend.  I am madly in love.

We have used both Netflix, Amazon and Apple TV.  Of the three, I am liking Netflix the best.  They all work equally well so far, but Netflix has more options that I enjoy (weird documentaries, BBC shows etc.).   Plus I have found great new stuff through their recommendations.

  • I've definitely considered that it's our internet.  Time Warner sucks badly.  I think it's Netflix though because my laptop internet works fine and when Netflix says it can't connect to the internet, it takes me to a Wii page to test the wireless connection and that always checks out.  It sounds like others have similar issues.

Wendy--what is a firmware update?  Does that require a disk? I tried to update through Wii but it says I have the latest version.  I don't have any  other options to stream it, I don't think.  My Tivo is really old.

  • If you want to try another streaming device, check out the Roku.  We have Roku in our bedroom and Apple TV in the living room.  We love them both equally, and they both seem to stream better than the PS3.  You might find it performs better than the Wii.

If you have the ability to change, we've found Fios to be light years better than the TW service we had in the city and Cablevision we've had since moving to NJ.

  • We love our Roku.

I've had a few connection problems which sound identical to yours, Fallin, but I'm sure that's our internet, because it's only when I stream from the bedroom, which is the farthest from our router.  I am itching to set up the new, stronger router this weekend.

The update from wii is a firmware update. You're good on that. I suspect people will complain and it will be updated again soon.

Do you guys have just Roku, or do you have cable as well.  I'd like to get rid of satellite, but my H is against it (even though he goes around talking about how he "doesn't" watch TV.

  • We have Netflix, Hulu, and do some amazon. Our bluray always messed up on when we are doing Netflix "network connection error"  but our wii does great. I did the amazon prime freeonth but didn't think their selection was worth it. Occasionally we buy tv shows and movies on amazon. Especially for shows on channels we don't get.

I was also going to suggest the Roku. We got one for Christmas and love it. The Roku Netflix interface is more like what the Wii Netflix interface used to be. It also seems to be much more reliable for streaming than the Wii was. We also use it to watch Hulu Plus, which has all of the TV shows we watch with current episodes.

We use it for Amazon streaming too, since we already have Prime, but their selection of free streaming stuff is tiny. I would not buy Prime just for this purpose. However, we LOVE Amazon Streaming for renting newer movies that aren't available on Netflix -- but you don't need Prime for this.

And still, $7.99/mo for Hulu Plus, $7.99/mo for Netflix, $39/year for Prime, and $5-10/mo for rented movies <<<cheaper than cable. The only thing we really miss is HBO.

The older version of the Roku box pops up on Woot from time to time. The one we have is $100 on Amazon, but other versions can be had for about half that. The reason we wanted the one we got is that it has a hard wired ethernet connection in addition to wireless, so we get a super fast connection by plugging it in to the router (which is right by our TV anyway).

We still have cable, although with so many different internet streaming options, its seeming more and more unnecessary.  Sports is our dealbreaker.  I don't foresee us ever giving up ESPN.
