Relocating

Hi Rhode Islanders! My husband and I along with our 5 1/2 month daughter are moving to RI next month from Maryland. We both went to PC so we are familiar with the area. However, we are looking for a walk able living community that would things to walk to with our baby. My husband will be working at city hall in downtown providence so ideally we'd be close to there. We are looking at east side right now. Any suggestions? Tips on locations or things to do with a 6 month old to meet new people?

  • Welcome to the board!

There are a couple of playgrounds on the East Side. One of them is Gladys Potter, and is located at the intersection of Humboldt Avenue and Elton Street. Lots of parents take their little ones there in the warmer weather. I forget exactly where the others are, since I am closer to Worcester MA now.

  • My friend lives on the East Side with her DH and two kids (ages 4 and 2) near Wayland Square.  She loves the location.  She takes her kids to story time at Books on The Square, and she also goes to music classes I believe (not sure where).  She has a car, so she also drives to Bellani Maternity in Warwick for classes for the kids.  Good luck with your move!
  • I agree with the East Side. Another option would be the Pawtuxet Village area of Cranston, also called Edgewood. Not as much to walk to, but the Village is nice and walkable with a stroller. It is also an easy and short drive into Providence.

As for places to meet new people - Bellani Maternity offers lots of different classes for mamas and kids. RI New Moms Connection has mothers groups for different age-ranges.

Meetup.com has a bunch of different groups, both for mom/kids, families, individuals. Just search there for something that interests you. I'm part of a meetup group called RI Working Parents, which tries to do stuff on nights/weekends and include whole families. Most of the families that are active in that group have babies between 3 months and a year old now.

    Welcome to the board!

  • Also in the east side there's a park on Hope Street at the end of Blackstone Boulevard.  It's also a great place to go walking with your little one.  In the summer theres a farmers market there & during the winter the market moves indorrs nearby in Pawtucket.  Its a cute place to bring kids - samples, fresh produce, music

My brother & his family live in the Edgewood area also and LOVE it.  lots of parks and a great family atmosphere.
