S/O - napping at daycare/pre-school - shoes??

Our new school has the kids wear their shoes in bed (well it's a cot with a sheet & a blanket.) I was told it's for fire safety reasons - God forbid the fire alarm goes off, they'd need to be able to evacuate quickly.

Frankly, I wouldn't mind if E ran out in socks, lol

I just think it's dirty, uncomfortable, and just not conducive to my daughter actually taking a nap in the middle of the day - something she's pretty much outgrown.

What's it like in your school?

Re: S/O - napping at daycare/pre-school - shoes??

  • The daycare center I worked at also had the kids wear shoes. Could you imagine having to try and put shoes on 12 or 18 toddlers after naptime was over in addition to packing up their cots and watching them? I am sure they don't mind.

  • He had to wear shoes. I really don't think it's a big deal. Besides the fire safety thing (you really want her in socks in a parking lot/street?) the teachers don't need to waste time putting shoes back on 15 kids after nap every day.

  • It never ever occurred to me, lol.

In a fire, I wouldn't care what they were wearing as long as they were OUT.  It does seem really uncomfortable to sleep like that, but the kids don't seem to care. :)

Yup. I've been at K's school at naptime and none of the kids cared that they were wearing shoes.

  • Our daycare keeps their shoes on. The boys tend to take a longer nap at DC than at home

  • They wear shoes. It's not the daycare saying they have to. It's the licensing/firecode board.

The only time the kids take off shoes is when changing into snow boots of changing clothes after an accident.

As soon as they walk they need shoes all day.

    Same here.

They also sleep on a very firm mattress with no blanket still and they don't mind. So shoes is a non issue for us.

  • When my son started daycare full time last year this for some reason seemed so odd to me.  I even posted on it here.  I think I was just in general upset because he was so unhappy at first about having to send him to daycare full time so I found this so upsetting. I quickly got over it.  The only thing though that still kind of grosses me out is that you know that one day his head is laying where his feet were the previous day.  IN the summer it's better as he has crocs so he knows how to put those on and off himself but when he wears sneakers I still kind of feel bad for him for having so sleep w/ them on.
  • Isn't it a law that they need to have shoes on?

That being said - she obviously sleeps with shoes on, it doesn't bother me.  She's sleeping for 2 hours a day on the blanket and I wash them at the end of every week.  If it's between her not sliding across the floor with socks on if God forbid there were a fire and getting a little dirt or some wood chip pieces on the end of her blanket, I'll take the dirt. Not a big deal to me. Sometimes she does it at home, too, to be honest... it's a battle I'm not willing to fight every single time - I'd prefer her peacefully going down for a nap.
