Air Tahiti baggage policies

Hi ladies,

I have a few questions regarding the Air Tahiti luggage limits for inter-island flights.

Their website says they have a 44lb limit on checked luggage, and if I understand it correctly - 6lb limit on carryons.

First the carry-on limit:  is this right and do they enforce it?  I'm sure my husband's carryon will be over the limit between his laptop or ipad and camera.  I could check my carryon but even my purse might be 6lbs with all the odds and ends that get stuffed in it when traveling.

For the checked baggage:  Can you just pay for however many pounds you are over the limit regardless of how your suitcases are organized (i.e. if your suitcase was 46 lbs you would pay for 2 lbs over)?  Or do you have to reorganize your bags so that you have one bag up to 44 lbs and anything over needs to be in a separate bag that you will pay for?  Between the added weight of whatever we buy in duty free on the way out, plus possibly incorporating our carryon luggage into checked I'm concerned we may exceed the 44 lbs limit.

Re: Air Tahiti baggage policies

  • I don't know about how they enforce the international flights on Air Tahiti, but they definitely enforce them on the island-to-island flights once you're there.  We had to pay extra for my heavy carryon (and we had to check it).  They didn't say anything as we went from Tahiti - Moorea, but for the Mooera - Bora Bora flight we paid about $20 (they said we could pay a bit less, but then we'd have to pay again when we flew Bora Bora - Tahiti).

  • I agree with Jo- the interisland air is hit or miss, but they will charge you. I actually have never had to pay for extra carry on baggage and I know my carry on was more than 6lbs. I've probably flown Air Tahiti about 15 times, too! However, I think they just use that restriction because the airplanes are small and you really can't bring that much on the plane with you. So, don't expect to be lugging on a rollerboard. However, a large tote bag or a camera bag should be sufficient to meet their criteria. They will charge for checked baggage no matter what if it's over the weight limit. I have never had a suitcase over the limit, though.

Air Tahiti Nui, the international carrier, is far less restrictive with their carry ons. You can bring on rollerboards and tote bags.

  • I think you are taking too much luggage.  All you need is a few swimsuits, a few cover ups, and a few items to wear to dinner.  One or two pair of shoes. We are going for 15 days in a month and I have managed to pack everything we need in a duffel bag.  Now, if you are taking a small child and need a diaper bag, etc etc, that is a completely different story. But if you think you need over 44 lbs of luggage, then there may be a packing issue.

((Keeping in mind, everything you take will come home reeking of beach - do you really want to do a ton of laundry?))
