Talk to me about Los Angeles...
I am contemplating surprising the hubs with a trip to LA for his 30th at the end of August. He wants to go to a taping of The Price is Right so bad so I want to get tickets for that. What else is popular to do in LA? What other areas are close enough to visit (and worth a trip)? I wouldn't want to be away for too long since we have a young daughter but I think he'd love this. I think we'd go for three nights.
Any recommendations on decently priced hotels?
Re: Talk to me about Los Angeles...
(argh, just posted from my ipad and the reponse got deleted....)
We went to LA in late Oct/early Nov 2011 and had a blast! H was at a work conference all week so I was on my own sightseeing and shopping during the day. We rented a car (definitely needed one) and luckily brought our GPS, which was saviour in the LA traffic.
I went to the Tim Burton exhibit at LACMA, shopping at The Grove (and subsequently saw Maria Menounos and Mario Lopez taping Extra), saw the Modern Family homes, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Hollywood Blvd (saw a few glee characters), saw Kat Von D at her tattoo parlor, and did the Warner Bros. tour which was awesome. We are huge fans of Friends and actually got to sit on the infamous orange couch from Central Perk (and the rest of the tour was really fun). I also did some shopping at the Original Farmer's Market, and we did go through Beverly Hills. We missed Rodeo Drive though- not that I planned to buy anything.
We ate a ton (lots of food recommendation in my blog), and LA has so many terrific restaurants. For late night dining, I personally love In-N-Out so we always eat there when we're on the West Coast, and make sure to go to a food truck- they're infamous in LA.
I did blog about it (do have a few blog posts left to do but majority is there), so let me know if you'd like the link. Have so much fun! We loved LA.
I went a few years ago, specifically to go to the Price is Right. It was crazy because it was right before Bob Barker retired. The tickets you get are just tickets that allow you to stand in line to see if you can get in. They take the first part of the group that will fit in the studio. We ended up spending the night on the street in front of the studio so we would be assured that we got in. There were about 200 other people out there with us so it was a fun night, but not a lot of sleep. I dont know if you have to be in line so early now or if that was just because Barker was retiring. After you stand in line you will be interviewed and asked where you are from and what you do for a living. Be sure to have fun and creative answers because that is how they choose who will be called down. You have to have a lot of energy when you answer.
We also went to a taping of two and a half men which was fun. You can get studio tickets for free, just google it. We took a stars home tour, I dont usually like tour buses but this one was fun because they told you who lived where, they also took us to the hollywood sign, and to rodeo drive.
Make sure to go to the Santa Monica pier and ride the ferris wheel. Venice Beach is fun. Ask at your hotel for them to recommend resturants where you can see stars. We went to one (cant remember the name) and we saw/met Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.
We stayed in the Century City part of town that was a good location. You will have to rent a car because public transportation isnt good. Driving is sort of hectic but not worse than other big cities i have been to.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Have fun!
We were in L.A. in Nov. 2010 and we were mostly there because SIL was getting surgery done for MS, so we rented a house in Anaheim.
While we were there we went to Universal Studios, Disneyland, Griffith's Observatory, and we did some shopping but I can't remember where.
We rented a car because we were out in Anaheim, but I think you would probably need one where ever you stayed - none of the things we did were close to each other.
Define decent priced?
DH and I go up to LA a few times a year for concerts. Depending on what part of town we need to be in we either stay at the Magic Castle Hotel in Hollywood or the JW Marriott at LA Live. Both hotels run about $200-$250 a night.
If you like museums you should definitely check out LACMA. You can combine a trip to LACMA with the Page Museum (aka the La Brea Tar Pits) and breakfast/lunch/dinner at the Farmers Market.
If you like music definitely hit up Amoeba Records.
Window shopping along Rodeo Drive. There are some great art galleries in the area and you can easily spend a few hours browsing their collections. When we were up in LA last march one of the galleries had a Picasso and his Women collection. We spent over an hour talking to one of the staff and he gave us a personal "tour" of the collection. Sadly DH would not let me take a Picasso home with me!
You could easily get tickets to a taping of he Jimmy Kimmel Show (www.1iota.com).
Check what you need to do for tickets to TPIR..I've heard that if you're not a group, you have to get there quite early and wait in line. But there is SO much to do in LA! You can find tons to do in a long weekend. Everyone has mentioned so many awesome things, but since things are quite spread out and traffic makes it difficult to show off the good things about LA. No kidding--it sometimes took 30 minutes for my dad to drive the 3 miles from his place to mine. So for a long weekend, go to Hollywood, West Hollywood and maybe walk around Beverly Hills. You can go to Hollywood & Highland (the Kodak Theater is there which is where they do American Idol, The Oscars..), Mann's Chinese Theater (where the hand/footprints are)...take a Starline Tour (www.starlinetours.com). As others mentioned The Original Farmer's Market (same place as CBS where TPIR tapes), is really great and they've added The Grove which has more shopping & restaurants.
Hotels really are going to depend on your budget. Give us an idea...
