Do you have a group of friends that are a package deal?
One couple just cancelled on the XC ski trip b/c her H is getting laid off. I want to invite one other couple, but if I invite this one couple, I'd "have" to invite the other couple. Mostly b/c we are all close. And then if I invite that 2nd couple, I'd almost feel obligated to invite a 3rd for the same reason. I'm less close to the third, but this whole particular group is very close.
I'm not venting or complaining here. Just wondering if other people know what I mean about certain friends being a package deal.
Re: Do you have a group of friends that are a package deal?
Yeah, our normal hangout group is like that, there are 7 of us that are pretty close. Almost all the time when I make plans with one of them it ends up being the wholoe group. Luckily I really like them all so I dont mind it most of the time, but in a vacation situation I could see how it could get sticky. Limited room & other folks there & such.
Definitely. S will invite a few people to do something (i.e. tomorrow he's going to see the Car Show with a bunch of his dude friends), and then when he tells me who's going most of the time I think, "Oh, since you asked X, did you ask Y, too?" And then S is all like, "Oh... Yeah, I need to ask him, too."
I don't know if it's a gender thing, but I *always* think about that kind of stuff when organizing something with a bunch of people. And I also think of it in terms of who would not get along. There are some people that we just know won't (or haven't in the past) mesh well together, so I don't want to create an awkward situation.
Yup - it's pretty much this. It is fantastic for gatherings, but vacations, it becomes difficult.

It occurs to me that we do have a pair of sisters that we are friends with both and their SO's, and there are times when we prefer to hang out with just one of them (they are WAY less drama without the sister around). We have talked about it being awkward for not inviting the other sister, but sometimes wanting a lack of drama trumps. I think they both appreciate it as well, because they like being an individual couple and not always having to deal with the other one, if that makes sense.
