Question - FRUIT FLIES!

Ok so I am new to this board, but obviously not new to cleaning & organizing...

So my question is, what are some odd ways to get rid of fruit flies? They are driving me nuts! We have no old fruit or anything around. They just keep coming out of no where. I can't use pesticides, b/c I have a large marine aquarium with live corals and fish and can't risk it.

Any help would be great! Thanks in advance!

Re: Question - FRUIT FLIES!

  • Pour some red wine into a glass or bowl.  Cover tightly with saran wrap.  Poke a few holes in the top of the saran with a toothpick.  Wait for a few days and be disgusted.

*There are a million variations to this involving vinegar, dish soap, and some others that I can't remember.  My fruit flies only like red wine though!

  • I put apple cider vinegar in a wine glass with some dish soap. I left it uncovered and caught a bunch within an hour.

I changed it out and left it out for a few days.  They haven't returned.

  • I know this sounds like bs, but fill a ziploc half full with water, and put a penny in there. Hang it near the area where you have the issues!

I had a really bad fruit fly problem in my last house, because it didn't have a garbage disposal. I nailed one of these guys up right in front of my sink, and voila, no more bugs!

    The pups!
  • Thanks ladies! I`m going to try it all, they are making me go crazy! And in the middle of winter no less!

  • I use the Terro fruit fly trap. It's non- toxic and I find it works quite well. They get attracted to the nectar fly in and can't get out! I buy mine at Wal-mart.
  • those methods are good for catching the live ones, but you also need to kill the eggs or they'll just keep coming back. Pour some bleach down the sink drains. That should do it.

Just did this at MIL's house, but with Gatorade and/or stale beer. Works great. :P
