Jenny

How has your at-home gel nails system been going?  Again, I am sick of getting fills every 2 weeks and I need an alternative.  My natural nails grow beautifully and they are strong, but I hate that the polish chips after a couple days despite the brand that I use.

Re: Jenny

  • I am still in love with it. Because my nails have ridges, regular polish hates to stay on. (I can paint Saturday afternoon and have to remove it on Sunday).

I get a good 10-12 days off the shellac. Sometimes more if I do an exceptional job at applying the base coat. For me, there is no other option.

Removing the polish is a PITA. It takes about 30 minutes. 10 minute soak and then scraping with a wooden tool.

It still sounds better than making an appointment, driving there, sitting there for 45 minutes, paying $30 and then driving home.  I hate going there!

If you know the type of machine and gel you use, could you please post it?

  • The gel is Shellac. You can buy it off Amazon.com. Base coat, top coat, color.

    I bought this UV light.

  • Thank you!  Knowing what a spaz I am, do you think I could figure it out?
  • Definitely. Google search shellac nail polish and it will give you some instructions.

Basically, start with a clean nail with cuticle pushed down.  Make sure the nail is cleaned of all oils, lotions etc... (I bought a nail cleaner, but I think some alcohol might work.)

Paint on the base coat in a thin layer and "cap" the nail. As in, paint the tip of it as well. Put under light for 10 seconds. Repeat with other hand.

Paint the original hand with the color with the same method and put under lamp for 2 minutes. (The lamp has a built-in timer.) Repeat for other hand and then repeat again for both hands.

Paint the top coat. Because I am lazy I paint both hands and put them both in the lamp.

Then moisten a cotton ball with 100% rubbing alcohol (or as close as you can get) and go over each nail. This will remove the tackiness.

And you are good to go.

  • I might just buy the lamp and the magical potions with my next gym paycheck.  Thanks doll!

I am getting my acrylics taken off again tomorrow.

  • You're welcome :)

Also, my nails are MUCH stronger with this polish on.
