Magazine Subscriptions on Kindle?

Hello! I usually post on theknot, but I think you can give me a better answer. I want to send my friend in Afghanistan a kindle and put some book and magazine subscriptions on it, but I am worried that he won't get the new issues of the magazines while he is over there. Do you know if he can still get them or not? Aside from pre-loading it with tons of stuff, any other advice for making it easy for him to use and enjoy while he is deployed? TIA!

Re: Magazine Subscriptions on Kindle?

  • I've had my kindle in Afghanistan, and I have it now in the UK.

Books are easy.   With a new Kindle he should be able to download books via whisper net, or if he doesn't get a good signal where he is he can download books from the Amazon website and then transfer them to his Kindle via the included USB cable (I did this with my first kindle, which didn't have the international whisper net, and it was no problem).

With magazine subscriptions, there is a charge for international delivery via whisper net. I don't remember how much it is, but it's on the amazon website.   Again, I think he can transfer via USB if whisper net isn't feasible.

My kindle was one of the things that got me through a few deployments to Afghanistan. I  love reading, and went through TONS of books, and it was awesome to have all of my books in one small device that I could take with me wherever I went.   I think your friend will like this a lot!

  • I think it all depends on the specific model and specific location.  Durning DH's last deployment Whispernet did not work where he was located, but did work while he was in transit at larger bases (such as Leatherneck).

Using the USB is a great option to avoid extra charges as long as they have an electricity and an internet connection. I don't know this to be true, but I tend to think that if someone is in a location where whisper net does not work, then they also may not have an internet connection.  I really am not certain about that though; I'm just speculating.

Good luck with figuring it out.  Hopefully between people's responses and what you know about your friend's location you will be able to figure out something that will work well.
